Joe C. Record

We split yesterday as I took my chances with the White Sox as a legitimate underdog against the Rockies and it didn’t pan out. Sometimes, you need to take those chances and nothing was lost for the night with plenty of opportunity to make a profit.
Mid-Afternoon Alert – (4:05 pm ET)
Miami Marlins (5-4) at Washington Nationals (6-2)
Strasburg Is Due
We always hear, with his 4 different pitches, that Stephen Strasburg has some of the best stuff in the game. While it does appear to seem that way, Strasburg’s record doesn’t reflect it due to injuries, low runs support, or just a poor occasional outing in which he’ll lose the game and still strike out close to 10 batters.
The Miami Marlins have gotten off to a superb start, but this is the perfect spot to take the Nationals with Strasburg taking the rubber at home. The Marlins are clearly a weaker team on the road and the Nats are off to a sensational start, themselves.
Washington has beat up on Marlins pitching in their last two games and the meat of the order in Jayson Werth (.345), Adam LaRoche (.321), and Ryan Zimmerman (.375), have been stellar all season long. I haven’t even mentioned Anthony Rendon (.418) and Bryce Harper. Although Harper isn’t hitting for average, he’s coming off of home run and 3 rbi’s in yesterday’s game. Simply put, this team is loaded!
The Marlins counter with a few new acquisitions of their own in Garrett Jones, Casey McGehee, and Jarrod Saltalamacchia, but the Nats are clearly the better team and can possibly contend for a World Series title. In order for that to happen, Strasburg needs to be more consistent. Look for a Washington win this afternoon.
Although I like the Nats, I’m not thrilled with the odds. That said, it’s too early to go with the runline to escape these type of odds.

Milwaukee Brewers (6-2) at
Philadelphia Phillies (3-5)
Cliff Lee at -120 Odds
There’s not much to be said here. Even though Milwaukee and Ryan Braun have come storming out of the gates, if you have a chance to grab Cliff Lee (2-0, 6.00) at these type of odds at home, you take it.
Milwaukee isn’t known for their pitching and Marco Estrada (0-0, 1.59) certainly doesn’t scare me. This game comes down to Lee’s effectiveness against a strong Brew Crew lineup that features the like of Carlos Gomez (3 HR, 5 RBI, .367), Jean Segura (.320), Jonathan Lucroy (.387) and a renewed Ryan Braun (3 HR, 9 RBI, .241).
In the offseason, Braun took a major step in the right direction for PED offenders as he personally called and apologized to fans about his usage of PED’s. Nobody has ever extended the olive branch that far and this will enable him to play 2014 with the backing of the fans and a clear conscience.
With all of that said, I’m still taking Cliff Lee at home.
