Let’s make a profit and be one step ahead as we head into the weekend’s games with our MLB Picks of the Day.
Chicago Cubs (29-41) at St. Louis Cardinals (46-26)
This game provides a good pitching matchup as Lance Lynn, with one just one loss to his resume, takes on the gamed Scott Feldman of the Chicago Cubs as he attempts to give the Cubbies some sense of respectability.
A Jack of All Trades
In his last outing, Scott Feldman proved that he could not only support his team with his good pitching, but he also drove in the winning runs to give himself and the Cubs a 5-2 victory over the Mets at CitField. He allowed just 1 run on 2 hits in 7 innings pitched.
29-41 isn’t a great record, but the Cubs are slowly starting to get better with players such as Anthony Rizzo and the pitching of grinders such as Scott Feldman (6-5, 3.05).
Bounce Back Performance Needed
Lance Lynn and the St. Louis Cardinals have been cruising all season long. The offense is loaded with the likes of Matt Carpenter, Carlos Beltran, Matt Holiday, and Allen Craig. The pitching staff is equally tough and starter Lance Lynn (9-1, 3.56) is a huge reason for their success.
Lynn is coming off of an awful outing against Miami that saw his earned run average skyrocket from 3.00 to 3.56. That was the 2nd consecutive outing in which Lynn was less than stellar. That said, he’s had a good history against the Cubs. In 5 games started, Lynn is 4-1 with a 2.70 ERA against Chicago.
The Cardinals don’t have to worry about too much these days, but they need a solid outing out of one of their best starters who’s been laboring lately.

Colorado Rockies (37-36) at Washington Nationals (35-36)
Roy Oswalt makes his first appearance as a member of the Colorado Rockies and he'll face Jordan Zimmerman and the Washington Nationals. This appears to be a lopsided pitching matchup as Oswalt hasn’t been relevant since about 2010.
Oswalt was a great pitcher for the Houston Astros, but those days are long gone and I don’t expect much from him here, nonetheless against one of the better pitcher in the National League in Zimmerman (9-3, 2.44)
Zimmerman has pitched well at home the tune of 6-0 with a 1.06 ERA. That’s nearly perfect! He also carries a career record of 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA against the Rockies. This is all outstanding, but any pitcher that faces Carlos Gonzalez and Michael Cuddyer will need to be careful. Not having to deal with Troy Tulowitzki makes things a bit easier, but “Cargo” is coming off yet another game in which he shined. Gonzalez hit his 20th home run in a 5-2 loss to Toronto and is one of the most electrifying hitters in all of baseball. The pitcher always has the advantage, but we’ll see.
Oswalt is a huge question mark and although Washington’s offense is lacking, I’m giving them more than the benefit of the doubt here.
