Let's find out what kind of MLB picks our handicappers have mustered up for Thursday's small slate of games.

Cardinals (Lynn) vs. Reds (Cingrani)

Covered by Willie Bee

Matt Adams was the hero for the Cardinals in last night's marathon 5-4 victory. The win moved St. Louis to within one game of Pittsburgh for the division lead.

Expect another hard-fought battle in the series finale tonight. Tony Cingrani, who owns a 2.63 ERA in 37.2 IP at home this season, will be vying to outperform Lance Lynn, who's been struggling lately. Not only is the righty 2-5 with a 4.91 ERA since the All-Star Break, he's also 5-6 with a 5.49 ERA on the road.

Willie believes the Reds (on the run-line at +155) are the play tonight for a couple of reasons. For one, Allen Craig will be missing for St. Louis; also, the Cardinals have been poor against lefties all season long.

Red Sox (Peavy) vs. Yankees (Nova)

Covered by Swinging Johnson

The Red Sox have to be thrilled with their investment in Jake Peavy so far. He's given them quality starts in five of his six appearances and has now gone 5-1 with a 3.42 ERA in eight starts over the second half.

That being said, Peavy doesn't have the best career numbers against the Yankees and the home team will have Ivan Nova on the hill. Nova has become the most dependable starter of the staff and is coming off a complete-game shutout against Baltimore.

This will obviously be an emotionally charged series at Yankee Stadium, especially after that Ryan Dempster/Alex Rodriguez fiasco, but Swinging Johnson thinks New York is the best bet at -105.

White Sox (Quintana) vs. Orioles (Gonzalez)

Covered by Ron Patrick

A win tonight is much-needed for the Orioles, who are four games back of a Wild Card spot after a tough stretch which has seen them go 4-6 over their past 10.

Baltimore lost again last night and next turns to Miguel Gonzalez, who's 5-2 with a 4.02 ERA at home in 2013. He's been a mess lately though, finishing the month of August with a 0-2 record and 5.25 ERA in four assignments.

Then there's Jose Quintana, who's 3-1 with a 3.74 ERA on the road this year. Not only that, he's completely dominated the Orioles (7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 11 K) on one occasion already. Perhaps that's one of the reasons why Ron likes the underdog price (+140) on Baltimore here.

Diamondbacks (Cahill) vs. Giants (Vogelsong)

Covered by Joe Freda

Ryan Vogelsong wasn't at his best in last week's matchup against Arizona, but he gets another crack at that lineup tonight. All things considered, Vogelsong has been a totally different pitcher, in a good way, since returning from the disabled list.

For Arizona, it's Trevor Cahill's turn in the rotation. He's 4-6 with a 4.78 ERA outside of Phoenix and has allowed 22 hits and 12 earned runs in 18 innings versus San Francisco thus far this season.

The MLB odds show the Giants favored, but not by too steep of a price. So, Joe is thinking the best sports pick is to make a play on the home favorites here, with hopes that Vogelsong will continue to perform well.

Cardinals (Lynn) vs. Reds (Cingrani)

Covered by Willie Bee

What a crazy series this has been. We shouldn't have expected anything less though, not with how much is on the line in this playoff race. Let's review today's MLB betting odds.

To wrap things up, we'll have southpaw Tony Cingrani up against Lance Lynn, who has failed to match his stellar home form out on the road. At most sportsbooks we find St. Louis favored at -135.

Red Sox (Peavy) vs. Yankees (Nova)

Covered by Swinging Johnson

The Yankees have won three in a row and are really making a strong push to steal away one of those coveted Wild Card positions.

They stay at home this week, but welcome none other than the rival Red Sox. Ivan Nova, who's been a stud for New York, and Jake Peavy will be on the mound tonight, with both teams listed at -105 to win.

White Sox (Quintana) vs. Orioles (Gonzalez)

Covered by Ron Patrick

It's back to Baltimore the Orioles go and they need to step it up if they want to make the postseason. They will have Miguel Gonzalez pitching, while the White Sox will lean on Jose Quintana.

Obviously this game means more to Baltimore, who still have something to play for other than pride. Gonzalez and the Orioles are listed as -160 favorites in this MLB betting spot.

Diamondbacks (Cahill) vs. Giants (Vogelsong)

Covered by Joe Freda

Since returning from injury, Ryan Vogelsong has looked miles better on the bump. He'll try to keep things going tonight at home against the Diamondbacks.

This has been a forgettable season for the defending World Series champions, but the Giants are still holding chalk here, with MLB books posting a line of -115 in favor of the home team.
