Here are a couple of Thusday Baseball's Best Bets! Let's check out some of the better betting lines for us bettors.

As we enter the last Thursday in September with just a few games remaining in the baseball regular season, we find that the American League wild card prospects are battling it out like cats and dogs in search of a playoff spot. Here are today’s MLB picks.

Cleveland has a decisive advantage over Texas with a 1 game lead and facing a weak Minnesota Twins team while the Rangers have to deal with the Los Angeles Angels; this could get interesting.

Cleveland Indians (88-70) at Minnesota Twins (66-92)

Next Victim…

We know that their schedule has been easy down the home stretch, but the Tribe has really been coming through, on a 6 game winning streak. You know when a grizzly 42 year old veteran such as Jason Giambi is hitting game winning home runs, things are going Cleveland’s way. Manager Terry Francona has to be one of the leading candidates for American League Manager of the Year and the prospects of Francona vs. Boston would make for great television.

Cleveland comes into Minnesota, facing a team that’s won just 2 out of its last 10 games. Minnesota is without Joe Mauer, traded Justin Morneau, and this team basically is a bunch of role players that can’t compete with a team like Cleveland. Minnesota’s pitching has been great in their last 2 games against Detroit, but they managed a total of 2 runs and that won’t win anything.

Zach McCallister (9-9, 3.88) starts for the Tribe and although he’s just an average pitcher, it won’t take much to stop Minnesota’s offense. McCallister has won his last 2 decisions, allowing just 2 runs in 11 2/3 innings pitched. He’s not a pitcher that will go 8 or 9 innings, but we should see more of the same tonight from McCallister.

Michael Brantley

One player to look out for in this game is Michael Brantley. The leadoff man has been on fire, on a 9 game hitting streak, and 9 for his last 13 with 1 HR and 5 RBI. Look for Cleveland to continue their winning streak against a team that’s very weak.

Tampa Bay Rays (89-69) at New York Yankees (82-76)

Exceeding Expectations

Both teams have exceeded expectations this season, but only one team will be going to the post-season as Tampa Bay is currently riding a 6 game winning streak and has destroyed the Yankees in the first two games of this series by a total of 15-3.

Once New York blew an opportunity on Sunday against the San Francisco Giants, they and their fans, have basically given up on the season and they’re mathematically eliminated from post-season play. I’ve been watching these games closely and I’ve never heard Yankee Stadium any quiter; it’s like a morgue. The question is “will the Yankees pack it in for the remaining 4 games of the season?”

Riding High

The Rays have been so dominant in this series, that they’re making the Yankees look like a minor league baseball team. Evan Longoria is coming off of a 2 home run game last night and this is a good sign for the Ray. James Loney, who was noted by the announcers as the best line drive hitter in the game, is starting to ignite with a 3 for 4 performance last night, and David DeJesus is 5 for 10 in his last 2 games with 1 HR and 4 RBI. This team is on top of its game.

The Rays start Alex Cobb (10-3, 2.90) and he’s had great success against New York in the past. He’ll be opposed by Ivan Nova. Nova is a very good pitcher, but he’s either a hit or miss type of pitcher. He can pitch a complete game shutout like he did in his last out against San Francisco or there are times when he hasn’t made it out of the 4th inning. I’m expecting Nova to pitch well, but the Yankees offense is the question.

I know Tampa Bay has dominated the last two games, but New York has too much pride to get crushed like this. Look for them to salvage a game as the dog at home.
