For our top-value MLB picks of the day for Tuesday we focus on the AL/NL West Divisions, namely on Rangers/A’s, Angeles/Mariners, and Padres/Dodgers.
Texas Rangers vs. Oakland Athletics 10:05 PM ET
According to the MLB odds at Bovada, Oakland is a -155 money line favorite, and the posted total is 7.5. Since the start of the 2014 MLB season, these AL West rivals have seen eight of their ten meetings at Oakland go over the total.
The Oakland A’s easily won the opening game of this four game series by the score of 8-0. Sonny Gray was terrific in his first ever opening day MLB start by allowing just one Texas hit in eight scoreless innings. The A’s pounded out 11-hits in the win, and six of those eleven were of the extra base variety.
Texas will send Colby Lewis to the mound tonight. Lewis was 10-14 in twenty-nine starts a season ago, posting a large 5.18 ERA, and compiling a lofty 1.52 WHIP. He started one game at the Oakland Alameda Coliseum last year, allowing five earned runs on ten hits, and in just 5 1/3 innings of work.
Oakland will go with newly acquired Jesse Hahn on the mound. Hahn was 7-4 in twelve starts last season for the San Diego Padres. He posted a stellar 3.07 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in fourteen total appearances for the Padres in 2014.
MLB Picks: Play on Texas and Oakland to go over the total of 7.5
Los Angeles Angels vs. Seattle Mariners 10:10 PM ET
The MLB betting odds at Pinnacle have Seattle as a -125 money line favorite on Tuesday, and the posted total is 7.0. A couple of southpaw starting pitchers will take the mound tonight with 34 year old veteran C.J. Wilson getting the nod for the Angeles, and youngster James Paxton going for the Mariners.
C.J. Wilson started four games versus Seattle in 2014 and three of those went under the total. Wilson was especially good in his two starts at Safeco Field in Seattle posting a stellar 2.63 ERA, and both of those games went under the number. Wilson is coming off a terrible 2014 MLB campaign that saw him fade badly over the final four months. However, he was solid in eleven starts in April and May, going 6-4, and posting a very good 3.05 ERA.
The AL West Seattle Mariners young hurler James Paxton has gone 9-4 with a 2.66 ERA since beginning his MLB career in 2013. Paxton has allowed only five career home runs in 98.0 innings pitched. In four starts versus the Angels in 2014, Seattle was 3-1, and Paxton posted a sparkling 2.59 ERA.
I like this game to be a low scoring affair, and one of my MLB picks on Tuesday will be indicative of that decision.
MLB Picks: Play on the Angeles and Mariners to go under the total of 7.0 at Pinnacle.
San Diego Padres vs. Los Angeles Dodgers 10:10 PM ET
According to the MLB betting odds at BetOnline, the Dodgers are a -158 money line favorite, and the posted total is 6.5.
The Padres will go with Tyson Ross on the hill for this battle between NL West rivals. Ross saw all four his starts last season go under the total when facing the Dodgers. The Padres also lost all four of those games. Although you can hardly cast any blame on Ross for those losses. In those four outings, he posted a very good 2.67 ERA, and an outstanding 1.04 WHIP. Ross has seen seventeen of his twenty-two starts go under the number the past two seasons when the total is 7.0 or less.
Since the start of the 2013 season, Zack Grienke has seen all of his six starts versus the Padres stay under the total. Grienke has been a major contributor to those low scoring affairs, posting a superb 1.66 ERA, and an excellent 0.74 WHIP in those outings.
MLB Picks: Play on the Padres and Dodgers to go under the total of 6.5 at 5Dimes.
