We're coming off of another positive day of MLB picks & with a full slate of games on Sunday we are excited to pick apart the schedule with some good research. It's time for MLB Picks of the Day!
Joe C. Record - 38-18 +17.66 Units: Recap
We split for the day but our 2 unit play with the Los Angeles Angels hit as we nailed it when we said that C.J. Wilson was due to pitch a huge game and he came up big. In our other game, we took the Yankees as a slight underdog at 1 unit and they could not stop Baltimore, who is on a roll. Time for some more picks and hopefully another day in the green.
No Home Field Advantage
I caught the entire game yesterday in which the Padres defeated the Dodgers and Zack Greinke with a Justin Upton home run in the 8th inning and it was clearly evident that location geographically between these two teams certainly matters as we heard a lot of "Let's Go Dodgers" chants. The game was low scoring, but there's also word that Petco Park is more of a hitters ball park than it's ever been and I tend to believe that.
Undefeated in a Padres Uniform
James "Big Game" Shields may not always pitch his best, but even with a 3.79 ERA, he's managed to stay undefeated. Some of it is good pitching and some of it is luck such as his last outing in which he allowed 4 runs and 5 hits in 5 1/3 innings against the Atlanta Braves in a no-decision as the Braves eventually won the game. Simply stated; the guy has been good, but not as good as his record indicates. He comes into this game as the Padres have a lot of momentum in slaying the beast in Zack Greinke as Justin Upton went yard to break a tie and defeat the Dodgers.
Expect Shields to come into this game with the same confidence that he always does and I expect yesterday's game to have a lingering effect despite the Pads facing Dodgers starter, Mike Bolsinger, (4-1, 2.08) who has had a tremendous amount of success this season. Odds makers seem to think that the Dodgers are the superior team and are in a good spot starting Bolsinger as they're a -110 betting favorite according to 5Dimes Sportsbook.
While Bolsinger has been outstanding, he hasn't been as good at home on the road as he possesses a 3.78 ERA away from Dodger Stadium. He did however hold the Pads to a mere hit in a previous outing as he went 8 innings and struck out 8 batters. While the previous history is undeniable, it's only one outing and I'm siding with San Diego at home in this grudge match.
MLB Pick- San Diego +102
Sunday Night Baseball: Cincinnati Reds (28-33) vs. Chicago Cubs (33-27)
The Writing Is on the Wall
Jon Lester hasn't lived up to expectations since putting on a Cubs uniform as he's been far from the pitcher that he was last season. Thus far this season, Lester is 4-5 with a 4.25 ERA. He's been awful as of late as he's allowed 11 runs and 20 hits in his last 9 1/3 innings. Along with that, Lester has 3 consecutive losses to his credit. Even the games in which he pitches well, he seems to have bad luck. Despite the poor run, odds makers appear to have faith in him as the Cubs are a considerable betting favorite tonight.
Lester will face Anthony DeSclafani for the Reds (5-4, 3.53) and DeSclafani has has a very respectable season for a losing baseball team. DeSclafani is on a 3 game winning streak and has allowed 9 runs in his last 4 starts which accounts for a total of 26 1/3 innings. When facing the Cubbies, DeSclafani has allowed only one earned run in 12 innings pitched.
Everything that I've mentioned thus far would lead you to lean in the Reds' direction, but this is an underachieving, losing baseball team, and although they have some very formidable hitters such as Brandon Phillips (.305 BA), Joey Votto (14 HR, 36 RBI, .296 BA) ,and Todd Frazier (18 HR, 39 RBI, .291 BA), their overall record doesn't lie. Just as I thought that C.J. Wilson was in a good spot yesterday, I think that Jon Lester in a good spot tonight as he faces Cincinnati. Make the Cubs your MLB pick and lay the moderate amount of juice.
