With just a handful of games remaining in the MLB regular season, we’re getting down to the nitty gritty of things. Who wants to be in the post-season and who wants to go home? Take a look at our MLB picks and you’ll get a closer look.

Capper Catalano’s Record
Going For the Gusto
207-178 -14.46 Units

We made a unit’s profit yesterday, but it could’ve been more. I knew that Pittsburgh was starting to pick it up while the Brew Crew were running on fumes and with my 2-unit pick, I took the Pirates and they delivered.

After winning a +248 bet the previous day fading Oakland, I decided to take a risk that I knew was a longshot by taking the Philadelphia Phillies at +240 against the A’s. This time it didn’t work out as Oakland won 3-1. Regardless, it was a risk worth taking and it was another winning day for the Capper.

Mid-Afternoon Game Alert!

Toronto Blue Jays (77-76) vs. New York Yankees (79-74)

Odds Makers Got This One Wrong!
The New York Yankees and starter Chris Capuano are a +101 underdog on the MLB odds at home against the talented Marcus Stroman and a team that they’ve beaten twice in the last two nights in the Toronto Blue Jays. Although Stroman might be an up and comer and the better pitcher, he excels at the Rogers Centre while going only 3-4, 6.00 on the road and allowing opposing batters to hit .315 off of him as opposed to .217 at home.

While their chances are very faint, the Yankees have won their last 3 games and aren’t mathematically eliminated from the post-season, trailing by 4.5 games with 10 games to go in the regular season. If a contender drops a game or two and the Yankees continue to take care of business, this isn’t over. Of course, Chris Capuano will need to put forth a good effort, but he’s been fairly respectable for New York. I don’t see why he wouldn’t pitch well this afternoon and the Yankees bullpen is strong with Betences and Robertson.

Jacoby Ellsbury
The entire Yankees offense has totally been a disaster. They couldn’t score more than 3 runs in a ball game for a solid week and a half….until yesterday and thanks to Jacoby Ellsbury.

Ellsbury had been slumping also, but came alive in yesterday’s victory with a 2 for 3 performance with a home run and a double. Players such as Brett Gardner, Derek Jeter, and especially Mark Teixiera have seen their batting averages plummet and Ellsbury could be the key to the Yankees finishing strong. Derek Jeter picked up a couple of hits yesterday, but Ellsbury appears to be the only threat in the Yankees lineup at the moment.

On paper, the Blue Jays offense should crush the Yankees offense, but look for New York to keep winning and be effective against Marcus Stroman, who has been a disaster on the road.

MLB Pick: New York +101- at 5Dimes – 3 Units

Milwaukee Brewers (79-75) vs. Pittsburgh Pirates (83-70)

Put A Fork In Them
I’ve been picking on the Milwaukee Brewers, because they’re done. They dominated for most of the season as one of the most improved teams in the league, but have spit the bit in the last month. This series was their last hurrah and clearly Pittsburgh is the better team, in the better spot at home, and wants to participate in the post-season.

Pittsburgh can feel really comfortable sending out pitcher Edison Volquez (12-7, 3.27). Volquez has somewhat revived his career as a Buc. Although he hasn’t been perfect at times, Volquez hasn’t lost a game in 10 starts! Look for a good 6 to 7 innings out of Volquez and that’s where the game rests on the shoulders of Josh Harrison and Andrew McCutchen. I won’t mention their recent statistics because I just mentioned them in my previous article, but let’s just say this is one of the best 1-2 punches currently in the major leagues. The Pirates have a healthy Andrew McCutchen and picked the right time to get hot, so add them to your MLB picks tonight.

MLB Pick: Pittsburgh -135 at 5Dimes
