MLB Picks Of The Day: N.Y. Teams Are This Cinco De Mayo Best Bets

Thursday, May 5, 2016 3:16 PM GMT

We're going to keep our MLB Picks strictly in New York as we approach Cinco De Mayo. There's a couple of really appealing games out there and timing is the key to these choices.

New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles

A Season Changer?
The New York Yankees possibly played a season-changing game yesterday night as they broke a long losing streak with a 7-0 win over Baltimore at Camden Yards. C.C. Sabathia had his best performance in a couple of years as he's owned Camden Yards in the past.

Sabathia had Baltimore guessing for 7 innings and the bullpen was a little shaky, but the Yankees slammed the door on the O's. Brian McCann also had a great game with 3 RBI's, a double, and a couple hits. On the flip side, Baltimore was terrible except for superstar, Manny Machado, who had 2 doubles and is the next great player in baseball.

Tanaka Time
Masahiro Tanaka gets the start for the Yanks tonight and Tanaka has been spectacular. The only problem is that he hasn't received any run support. For the season, Tanaka is 1-0 with a 2.87 ERA. I look for Tanaka to have a brilliant game tonight as the Yankees look to play off of the momentum. I consider it momentum because they didn't just win yesterday, they dominated and with C.C.Sabathia.

Table Setter
That's just what Jacoby Ellsbury is and that's why New York gave him a big contract. The problem is that he's either been injured or underperformed.

Yesterday was a different story as Ellsbury was in the zone. He was 3 for 3 with 2 stolen bases and 2 walks. In essence, he was 5 for 5 in getting on base and that's him at his best. Look for Ellsbury to build off of this game. The only thing stopping him is the threat of an injury. He's the type of player that when he's in the zone, he's unstoppable.

I like this matchup as I see Tanaka being able to handle guys like Chris Davis, who are prone to striking out. Baltimore has studs like Mark Trumbo, but these guys are all looking to deposit a baseball in the seats and Tanaka doesn't look to overpower the opposition; he looks to outsmart them.

New York Mets vs. San Diego Padres

DeGrom Is Da Man
The New York Mets are taking their 17-9 record out west against a weak San Diego Padres team and this is a perfect spot for them. Not only that, they're sending out the best pitcher in baseball in Jacob deGrom (3-0, 1.02 ERA). deGrom is certainly the most underrared pitcher in baseball.

Matt Harvey is supposed to be the leader of the staff. We're quickly finding out through deGrom and Steven Matz that Harvey isn't even the 2nd best pitcher on his own team. What I like about Jacob deGrom is his consistency and dominance, and confidence.  I can't remember the last time that he pitched poorly. The guy had a crisis with his newborn and comes back with wins. This guy is a beast and he's facing a weak hitting team in a pitcher-friendly Petco Park.

Yoenis Cespedes
Right now, Michael Conforto leads the Mets in hitting at .315 and has exceeded expectations. My only question is can he do it for 162 game? The Mets picked up Cespedes for a reason and he's playing much better than he did in Oakland as he can field the ball and can hit for average and power. Ever since he won that home run derby a few years back at CitiField, I knew that Cespedes would be a great fit for the Mets and he has been.

Thus far this season, he's hitting 8 HR, 25 RBI, and a ,289. The Mets provide him a great chance to pick up RBI's because they're always getting on base.

The MLB picks on this mismatch game is Mets having a dominant pitcher and a superior offense to that of the Pads. Go with the MLB odds and cash in on the Mets!
