Labor Day means that us bettors get baseball action all day long. As the NFL season get’s ready to kick off, let’s see if we can pick some spots and build up the bankroll as most of the focus will be off of baseball.
I feel like the bettor has the edge with a month to go in the MLB regular season as respective teams are in desperation mode to make the post-season. Let’s go over today’s slate of games while looking for any edge for our MLB picks.
Los Angeles Dodgers (81-55) at Colorado Rockies (65-73)
World Series Contenders
The Los Angeles Dodgers have put on one of the most amazing runs that you’ll ever see. At 26 games over .500 and with a 11.5 game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League West, the Los Angeles Dodgers have gotten hot at the right time, and they are now a favorite to win the World Series.
To add icing to the cake, the Dodgers start possibly the best pitcher in baseball in Clayton Kershaw (13-8, 1.72) tonight against a Colorado team that is going nowhere. Does Colorado have any chance tonight?
The Dodgers might possibly not be as good as their record indicates, but when a team gets on a major run like this, they start believing and their confidence skyrockets. There’s no Miguel Cabrera or Mike Trout on this team, but a combination of good pitching, like today, and timely hitting are a recipe for winning. The contributions of outfielder Yasiel Puig have put L.A. over the top.
The Next Trout?
Yasiel Puig needs to have more at-bats to be put in the category as Mike Trout, but he’s well on his way to stardom. Puig has shown consistency throughout the season and just keeps tearing the cover off of the baseball.
In 302 at-bats, Puig is batting .351 with 14 HR and 32 RBI. In his last 10 games, he’s 11 for 24 with 2 HR and 3 RBI. Puig is coming off of a big game on Sunday in which he scored the winning run with a 6th inning blast to centerfield to propel the Dodgers over the San Diego Padres, 2-1. This should be a good spot for Puig as Colorado is weak pitching-wise and Coors Field and the Colorado air are “hitter friendly”.
Look for Kershaw and the Dodgers to roll in this game against a team that’s a bit depleted and looking to play out the string.

Tampa Bay Rays (75-60) at Los Angeles Angels (63-72)
The Tampa Bay Rays are getting cold at the wrong time, on a 4 game losing streak, and can feel Baltimore, New York, and Cleveland all breathing down their back as they attempt to hold onto the last wild card spot in the American League. Not only that, Tampa Bay faces a with talent in the Angels who have won 4 straight games despite being out of playoff contention.
Look for Chris Archer (8-5, 2.81) to pitch well in a game of urgency. Archer has been a stud all season. In his last 3 starts, he’s allowed 4 runs and 13 hits in 21 innings pitched. From an Angels perspective, they’ll need to win with offense; Garrett Richards (4-6, 4.16) is overmatched and inconsistent. One game, he’ll pitch a 7 inning shutout and then the next start he won’t make it out of the 3rd inning. Good pitching wins game and this is a good chance for the Rays to stop the bleeding.

Proceed With Caution!
Mike Trout continues to prove why he’ll be the face of Major League Baseball for the next 15 years. He’s coming off of a 3 for 3 performance with a double and triple in a 5-3 victory over Milwaukee and after a slow start to the season, is putting up eye popping numbers. This is a player that can win as a hitter and save a game in the field. Look for Archer to approach with caution and not let one swing of the bat from Trout beat him.
This game offers you attractive MLB odds if you’re a Tampa Bay backer and look for Archer to put an end to this losing streak.
