Cincinnati Reds (27-31) vs. Chicago (31-26)

A Win is a Win
This is what the Cincinnati Reds are telling themselves after a 4 game sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies. Sometimes a team is struggling, run into a very weak team, pads their record, and gains some confidence. That's what has happened with Cincy in this instance as the Reds capitalized off of a great opportunity.

In tonight's game, the Reds square off against a Chicago Cubs team  who are coming off of a huge 12-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers who have been in a major slump with their offense. Both teams come into this matchup with some confidence and it should be a close game.

Starting Pitchers
The Reds definitely have the edge where pitching is concerned as Michael Lorenzen has been pitching quite well as of late. Lorenzen has pitched in 8 games and 6 started this season and has not allowed more than 3 runs in a game. He hasn't been getting the run support, but in his last 3 starts, he's pitched 19 1/3 innings and allowed just 6 runs. For the Cubbies, starter Tsyuoshi Wada (0-1, 4.19) has been very ineffective in his limited time pitching this season, but Wada has provided a strikeout per inning and has excelled at home, allowing just 2 runs in 11 innings pitched.

Joey Votto and Todd Frazier
The Reds have two hot hitters in the meat of their lineup in Joey Votto and Todd Frazier. Votto is coming off of a 3 home run performance against the Phillies on June 9th and is creeping up on the .300 mark. In the month of June, Votto is hitting .382 with 4 home runs and 11 runs batted in. He could definitely be a factor in this game.

Frazier has been no slouch himself as he leads the Reds with 17 home runs and 37 runs batted in to go along with his .293 batting average. Frazier is 13 for his last 30 with 5 doubles, 1 home run and 6 runs batted in during the last week. He hasn't been effective on the road, but a hot hitter is a hot hitter in my book, especially against subpar pitching. I really like the Reds as the underdogs in this game at the appealing price of +133.

San Francisco Giants (34-26) vs. New York Mets (31-29)

A Demoralized Team
The Mets have dropped a couple of games in a row, but can't be feeling good about last night as Matt Harvey allowed the most home runs in a game of his playing career.

New York has a very deep pitching staff, but Harvey is the heart of this team and right now, he doesn't have it. If anything, he's boosted the confidence of the Giants lineup of guys like Brandon Belt and Joe Panik as both went deep last night and this Giants team, who are the defending world champions, have basically owned the Mets pitching.

Guys like Buster Posey and Nori Aoki (.333 BA) have embarrassed the Mets offensively as both picked up huge hits in the ball game. Aoki was 4 for 5 and seems to really like wearing that Giants uniform.

Where the Mets are concerned, their offense has underperformed. They expected Lucas Duda to be a big star, hitting 30 plus home runs and it doesn't look like they will get that from Duda this season. The pitching is their strength and they need a top-rate performance out of starter Jonathan Niese tonight as he takes on Tim Lincecum.

Playing For a Job
Niese is just 3-6 with a 4.43 ERA and can easily be bumped down in the rotation as the Mets have prospects in Las Vegas looking to make the move. I expect Niese to impress in this outing as he's playing for a spot on this 6-man rotation. He's lost 4 decisions in his last 5 starts. The only thing that the Mets have going for them is that Lincecum can be erratic at times. This is a big risk, but for my MLB pick, I'm going to side with New York in a game that they can easily lose.
