Scherzer vs. Cueto
I can remember back in his hay day when there were some betting totals involving Pedro Martinez and the total was actually in the 5 to 5.5 range. I thought that this had the possibility, but with players in this game with guys like Bryce Harper, Joey Votto, and Todd Frazier, that’s just not possible.
Talk about believing in yourself! That’s just what Max Scherzer did as he bypassed money from the Tigers for an even bigger contract depending on his performance of last year.
Scherzer, came through with another big year, got the big contract from the Nats and has been as perfect as pitcher can be. The problem is at 9-6 with a 1.82 ERA is that he’s not getting an adequate amount of run support and you would think an offense such as Washington’s would provide this for him.
It doesn’t look good for the Reds. Against National League opponents. Scherzer has pitched 106 innings and has a 1.36 ERA. This entire write-up should be about his greatness, but we have to be fair, Johnny Cueto (5-5, 2.84) is a consistent superstar and unfortunately for him, he hasn’t gotten run support from his team either as he hold a .500 record and an ERA below 3.00.
This game has under written all over it. While the total of 6 is very low and could scare some bettors away, you’re dealing with 2 of the best starting pitchers in the game.

Pushing the Issue
When something is working for you, you ride it out and that’s just what I’m doing when I’m taking the Mets in this matchup even though I’m not totally confident in starter, Bartolo Colon.
I witnessed yesterday’s game and the Mets still had no offense as the score was 0-0 in the later innings. Starter,Jonathan Niese pitched a masterpiece, pitching just 82 pitches in 8 innings, but had to be lifted as the Mets needed some offense to break the tie. The offense delivered against reliever Sergio Romo for a 2nd time in a row and the Mets went on for another victory as a betting underdog.
I think that the Mets have the psychological edge in this game and are the underdog again. Unfortunately, I thought that they would be a bigger underdog, but we’ll settle on +110.
New York catches a break as Matt Cain (0-1, 9.00) gets his 2nd start of the season. Cain is a very good pitcher for a major leaguer, but he’s rusty as his first appearance didn’t go well and this is a chance for New York and their new found momentum to capitalize.
Who Will It Be Tonight?
I don’t look at the Mets offense with any seriousness because you don’t know who will be the guy to step up.
Daniel Murphy is proving to be the reliable player for the last few years while Curtis Granderson can hit the baseball out of right field in any ball park, but we just don’t know. What I do know is that Bartolo Colon has been inconsistent this season, but is coming off of an impressive performance in which he picked up the no-decision, pitching 7 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 8 batters. My money is on the Mets momentum with the hefty Colon getting the start.
