We have a short slate of games today, but still plenty of options to make some cash and provide our analysis for the betting public. It's MLB Picks of the Day, so let's get ready to make some plays.

The theme of this season has been surprises. We've seen a lot of teams such as the White Sox, Phillies, and Cubs having huge starts to the season while other teams like the Houston Astros have been a complete bust. There are a lot of good baseball teams with poor records. We'll have to see if this works itself out as we're only in the month of May.

Minnesota Twins vs. Houston Astros

There Has To Be a Winner
Normally, I would say that the Astros would destroy the Twins at Minute Maid Park and -148 are spectacular MLB odds, but Houston is just 9-18. This is the same team that beat the New York Yankees in the Wild Card game in Yankee Sradium last season and showed a ton of promise with studs like Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa. and pitcher Dallas Keuchel. Thus far ths season, the Astros have been one of the biggest disappointments in baseball because so much has been expected from them.

An Opportunity For A "W"
Tonight, Houston has to be licking their chops as they're hosting a team in the Minnesota Twins, who have a worse record than they do at 8-19 and the Twins are just 2-11 on the road. Records aside, the talent just isn't there for the Twins.

Joe Mauer
Mauer is a very complicated baseball player as this is a player that has won a couple of batting titles, but he's a big guy that lacks power and to many, hasn't lived up to expectations.

I distinctly recall Mauer having visual trouble and now it's supposed to be cleared up. Although he still lacks power, his .316 BA says that his eyesight has cleared up and especially his on base % is an amazing .445. This has got to be more than a coincidence. On base % is the number that a fan should go buy as Mauer is almost reaching base half the time that he steps to the plate. Look for Mauer to be a factor in this game as neither starter is a world-beater.

No Worries
Jose Altuve is off to another slow start for his standards. For anyone else, 7 HR, 14 RBI, and a .292 BA would be more than acceptable. Altuve also carries a .390 OBP% to go along with 10 SB and 12 doubles. Even though Carlos Correa has a tremendous amounf of potential, Altuve is carving in his spot in baseball history if he continues to have season like the ones that he's had recently. Phil Hughes will have a tough time dealing with Altuve and I see the Astros handling the Twins.

New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles

How the Mighty Have Fallen
The New York Yankees are now at the bottom of the American League East Division at 8-16. Poor acquisitions such as Jacoby Ellsbury and guys like Mark Teixiera getting hurt last season when they were having career years have not helped.

The Yankees have always been known to spend a lot of money on picking up players in the off-season, and this season, Hal Steinbrenner chose not to do so. Starlin Castro has lived up to expectations but this team is old and in need of spending some of their money. Until they do so, they will find themselves in many 6 game losing streaks like the one that they're in now.

C.C. Sabathia Gets the Start
There's not much to know in this game as C.C. Sabathia (1-2, 5.06 ERA) get's the start and he's pretty much done with. Even though the Yankees don't provide him with a lick of run support, Sabathia is literally a batting cage pitcher as the meatballs that he's throwing over the plate are getting tagged.

This is not good for the Yankees when Sabathia has to face the likes of Manny Machado (7 HR, 16 RBI,.350 BA), Mark Trumbo (8 HR, 22 RBI, .337 BA), and Chris Davis (7 HR, 17 RBI). While the Orioles have a chance to win the East Division, the Yankees look like their going to have a long season despite Alex Rodriguez finally starting to hit some home runs himself. This game is an easy MLB pick as the victory will go to the Orioles.
