Washington Nationals (21-17) vs. San Diego Padres (19-19)

New and Improved Padres?
Although the Padres have always been a bottom-feeder and now possess a .500 record, I would hardly call them contenders. With some key additions to their ball club, people were expecting a better start to the season. One big disappointment has been the addition of Matt Kemp.

The Downfall of Kemp
This was a guy that played on the L.A. Dodgers and was headed for a triple-crown. He was considered the superstar on his team that never got hurt and was underrated until he suffered a quad injury.

Ever since that injury, Kemp has been injury-prone and has lost his power. Thus far this season, he only has 1 HR, 21 RBI, and a .267 BA to go along with 5 SB. You can tell that Kemp is apprehensive when looking to steal and doesn’t have that same fire in his eye. He will need it this afternoon as Stephen Strasburg, who was once thought to be one of the best pitchers in the league, will get a look at Justin Upton, Matt Kemp and the Pads.

The Downfall of Strasburg
This is also a player that was thought to be super-natural, but injuries were a concern right from the start as Strasburg has a pitch count restriction right from the get-go.

Strasburg can be overpowering, but this season, he’s off to an awful start at 2-4 with a dismal 6.06 ERA. Strasburg is coming off of a beating against the Arizona Diamondbacks that saw his ERA go from 4.73 to 6.06. This is too good a pitcher to keep pitching like this and I expect him to pitch well in a pitcher friendly ball park such as Petco Park.

The Test
Everyone knows that Bryce Harper has been a flatout beast this season, jacking some monster shots and in bunches. Today will be a real test for the young phenom as people are already chanting MVP and we’re not even 40 games through the season.

Thus far this season, Harper has 13 HR, 33 RBI , and is batting .326. I think that there will be comparisons between Mike Trout and Bryce Harper again as this is the Harper that everyone expected. He’s looking like the best player in the league and Ian Kennedy will have a tough time facing the left hander.

Look for MLB betting odds favored Washington and Stephen Strasburg to put up a big performance despite playing at Petco Field. They have a ton of momentum.

Detroit Tigers (23-14) vs. St. Louis Cardinals (24-12): Sunday Night Baseball

One Team Is Hot and One Team Is Not
Even though this is true as the Tigers have dominated this series, the Cardinals are at home, playing on Sunday Night, and have a 2 to 1 ratio with win compared to losses. When you have a team team with Matt Carpenter (7 HR, 24 RBI, .323 BA), Matt Holliday (3 HR, 21 RBI, .328 BA),and Jhonny Peralta (6 HR, 19 RBI, .301 BA), you can hardly be considered a weak hitting team.

Aside from Dee Gordon and his near .500 hitting, Matt Carpenter is one of the best leadoff men in the game. He hits for power, average, and can run the bases well. Matt Holliday has gotten off to a slow start in the power department, but everyone knows what he’s capable of doing on the baseball diamond. The only problem for the Cards is that they’re running into one of the best hitting clubs in the league in the Detroit Tigers.

The Total Package
The Tigers are the total package because they have Rajai Davis and Ian Kinsler who are doubles and triples hitters that set the stage for the best hitter in Major League Baseball in Miguel Cabrera.

For the season, Cabrera has 10 HR, 29 RBI, and a .333 BA. He might not have the power of a Giancarlo Stanton, but there’s nobody in the game who has a better eye to ball contact ability when swinging a baseball bat and that’s why Miggy has been able to slug 400 home runs at the age of 32.

Cabrera also has J.D. Martinez and Yoenis Cespedes backing him up. This Tigers team is loaded offensively. They don’t have to have the best pitching in the world.

Sunday Night Baseball is the grand stage, especially with no basketball tonight. The Tigers are your MLB pick in this matchup.
