We have a full slate of MLB games to focus our handicapping skills on this last day in the month of May. Players are starting to heat up and so are the matchups. See who we like as our MLB Picks of the Day for Sunday.

Joe C. Record 26-7 +18.12 Units

New York Yankees (26-24) vs. Oakland Athletics (19-33)

If you look in the dictionary under the meaning of the word snakebitten, you'll see a picture of Athletics starter, Jesse Chavez, as Chavez has pitched some really good baseball, but due to lack of run support, has been walking away with losses.

Chavez sports a 2.44 ERA and just a 1-5 record to go along with it. Chavez has given the A's everything that they want and more, but in his last 3 games, he has 2 losses and one-no decision. This while allowing 6 runs and 20 innings pitched. He's a workhorse that can pitch over 100 pitches and lot leave the game into the hands of the bullpen and has held opposing batters to a .215 BA.

Carlos Beltran
I must admit, when Beltran couldn't hit for a lick at the beginning of this season, I thought that his career might be over. Once the light went on, so to speak, and Beltran finally got his confidence back, he looked like the Carlos Beltran of old.

First, he was making great contact and hitting doubles and then he finally started to slug some dingers. I personally witnessed the home run that he hit last night and in a stadium that is "pitcher friendly," Beltran drilled a home run over the center field wall against the A's to put the Yankees in the lead as the Yanks won 5-3.

That home run was huge as the Yankees were finally starting to get their confidence back after going 1-9 at one point. We look at today's slate and they're a +118 underdog against an inferior Athletics team. This could be due in part to the starting pitching matchup of Chavez vs. Warren and the A's having home field advantage. I will take the momentum and New York in this Sunday afternoon game as the betting odds are very appealing.

Sunday Night Baseball: Detroit Tigers (28-23) vs. Los Angeles Angels (26-24)

Stop the Bleeding
I like to play with fire and I also like to make MLB pick  on the Sunday Night Baseball game to give the bettors a chance to recoup their losses and this could be a good spot as the Detroit Tigers and starter David Price (4-1, 2.97 ERA ) look to salvage a game in their series with the Angels in Anaheim, California.

The "Price" Is Right
I talked about the word workhorse and there's nobody who's more of a workhorse than David Price as he can throw well over 100 pitches. Pitchers nowadays are usually subjected to throwing just 100 pitches or less, but if there's any pitcher to pitch a complete game, Price is number 1 on the list.

Wins have been difficult to come by for Price lately as he's 1-0 with 3 no -decisions in his last 4 starts, but he's been pitching well and supported by one of the best offenses in the league in the Tigers, led by Miguel Cabrera.

Price reminds me of Francisco Liriano. It's usually light's out for the opponent, but he'll have that occasional atrocious outing. I don't see that happening here and Price can go longer than Liriano. You should feel confident when placing a bet backing David Price as your starting pitcher.

Reigning AL MVP
One concern for Price and the rest of the pitchers in the league is one of the faces in baseball for the next 15 years in Mike Trout. I would say "the face", but the way that Bryce Harper has been hitting lately, this could be a friendly competition.

Trout is coming off of a game in which he went yard in an 8-6 Angels win over Detroit and Sunday Night Baseball is the type of game that Trout is well suited for because he likes the limelight.

In the month of May, Trout's batting average wasn't anything to write home about, but he had 7 home runs and 12 runs batted in. This is a 5-tool player that can also play a mean centerfield. He can beat an opposing team in so many different ways whether it be his speed, power, or his glove. This is a guy that Price will need to pitch around because he's a threat to change the complexion of a game at any time during a game.

This game should be as close as the MLB odds suggest, but the Tigers are a top team in the majors and I love their lineup and the different ways that it can be tweaked with guys like Rajai Davis. With Price pitching and the desire not to be embarrassed and swept on national television has me leaning in the Tigers direction.
