The LA Angels had Thursday off so they could travel 3 hours, after losing 3-0 to Detroit on Wednesday night.  The Pittsburgh Pirates return home from a trip to Miami.

Miami, after winning the first of the 4-game series, took the collar with narrow losses of 3-1, 3-2 and last night 4-3 in extra innings.

There is more bad news for the Bucs in the form of the injury list. All listed as questionable tonight, as the Angels and Pirates embark on this 3-game weekend set, are 4 key contributors to the Pirate lineup. Mercer (elbow), Freeze (hand), McCutcheon (thumb) and Cervelli (foot) are listed as questionable for tonight’s game.

This is in no small part the reason for a line dip of 15 cents from the opening MLB Odds. Pittsburgh, however, has one of the most deep and versatile lineups in all of MLB. And if only 2 of those starters miss action, they can easily compensate.

There are major edges for the Pirates in hitting, where they have the No. 3 batting OPS at .792 to the Angels’ .704 OPS mark, 22nd in MLB. In addition, there is a huge edge for the Pirates in terms of starting pitching, especially when considering the home performance of Liriano.

In 4 starts from this mound, Liriano has worked 25 1/3 IP with a 1.42 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP and a .187 BAA. Weaver has been abysmal regardless of site with a .886 OPS. This includes road numbers which in 23 1/3 IP have seen him post a 5.79 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and .337 BAA.

If the Pirates had all hands on deck, this would be a type of play, where you could take off the rubber band. We have a superior team at home, who will be hungry following 3 consecutive losses. We have the far better hitting team as pointed out by the diverse OPS numbers and there is clearly a huge home/road dichotomy among the starting pitchers.

For our MLB Pick, we will take advantage of our run line numbers, turning this mid-price favorite into an underdog selection. Consider that Pittsburgh has won 12 of their 15 (80%) home victories by 2 or more runs and that of the 29 Angels’ losses, 24 of them (83%) have been by 2 or more runs.
