We like to allow the maximum amount of print time, but on a Sunday, the options are limited.
Cincinnati Reds (1-4) at New York
Davis Saves the Day
Both of these teams got off to a rocky start this season, but the Cincinnati Reds have to feel like they gave one away yesterday at CitiField as Ike Davis’ pinch hit grand slam in the bottom of the 9th inning gave the Mets a much needed 4-3 victory over the Reds and a much needed confidence boost for the much maligned first-baseman.
Look for the Mets to carry this momentum into Sunday’s game as they’re on a 2 game winning streak.
Taylor Made For CitiField
Another an unexpected hero in the Mets victory was Curtis Granderson, Granderson’s 2-run home run in the 6th inning gave the Mets a 2-1 lead and might have given Granderson, whose swing is made for CitiField, some much needed confidence. This is a player that’s capable of 40 home runs in a season and could be a factor today as the Mets face Alfredo Simon (6-4, 2.87, 6 holds).
Last season, Simon was a middle reliever for the Reds and has moved into a starting position. Simon has potential to be a serviceable starter, but at this point, he’s a question mark and this game will be up to the Reds’ bats as they face Jonathan Niese (8-8, 3.71). Niese was activated from the disabled list on April 5th from an elbow injury and the Mets should have a slight edge in the pitching department.
The odds are very appealing from a Mets perspective. Although the Reds have very capable hitters like Joey Votto, they’re the ones coming into this game limping and starting a reliever. Take New York at home.

Arizona Diamondbacks (1-7) at
Colorado Rockies (3-3)
Worst Start in D’Backs History
It’s only been 8 games and the Diamondbacks have suffered some injuries, but they couldn’t have expected to get off to such a slow start. This was a team that was 81-81 last season.
Pitching Edge For Arizona
Although everything seems against Arizona, they have to feel good about a Miley (1-1, 5.25) vs. Anderson (0-1, 4.50) pitching matchup.
Wade Miley has been an above average pitcher since entering the majors and pitching is the Rockies weakness although they’ll have Brett Anderson trotting out to the rubber.
I’ve said this many times before; Colorado’s offense is very strong with the like of Troy Tulowitzki, Cargo, and Michael Cuddyer, but their defense is what has made them a losing team. Arizona definitely has the starting pitching advantage and with Paul Goldschmidt on their roster, the Diamondbacks can beat any team on any given day.
Arizona got off to a quick 4-0 start in yesterday’s game, but the Rockies explosive offense came back to outscore the D’Backs 9-0 in the remaining 6 innings thanks to 2 Nolan Arenado home runs.
I’ve been rolling with the favorites, but look for Miley and the Diamondbacks to steal one today as the slight underdog.
