The Diamondbacks are streaking up the NL West ranks as they take aim at sweeping the Rockies in Colorado as small road pups on the MLB odds in a Wednesday matinee.

Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Colorado Rockies
There are several good division races going right now in the MLB standings, but none closer from top to bottom than the NL West. Yeah, sure, no team in the group is exactly tearing diamonds up with only one of five squads currently above .500, but the Arizona Diamondbacks are one of the hottest teams outside of Chicago and will try to push their way into a share of the division lead Wednesday afternoon when they go for a sweep of the Colorado Rockies.

The NL West rivals are scheduled for a 3:10 PM (ET) first pitch in Denver, one of a half-dozen matinée matchups on the Hump Day baseball betting card. Chad Bettis will deliver that toss for Colorado, the Rockies tagged with a -118 moneyline at Heritage. Robbie Ray looks to contribute to the broom job for the D-backs, totals bettors having options with both 10½ and 11 marks available.

This contest concludes the third of six series meetings between the clubs, and it's looking like they'll be taking turns embarrassing each other in front of home fans. The first two series played took place in Phoenix where the Rockies took five of six. Arizona now stands to avenge being swept at home about 10 days ago after taking Monday's opener, 10-5, and posting a 5-1 triumph on Tuesday. Colorado closed as home chalk on the MLB odds in both tilts, priced at -160 in Game 1 and -120 last night. Tuesday's victory was the Arizona's seventh in the last 11 games played at Coors. Totals have been fairly level in that span at 5-6 O/U.

Snakes Inching Up Ranks In Mediocre NL West
Tuesday's victory also gave the Diamondbacks a 5-game win streak, the second-longest in the majors to the 8-game run the Chicago Cubs are on. Arizona is now tied for second with the San Francisco Giants in the NL West, each a game behind the Los Angeles Dodgers with Colorado only two games out.

Ray didn't make his debut for the Diamondbacks until just over a year ago, and he made it a dandy in this hitter-friendly park with six innings of 1-run baseball for just his second MLB victory. The lefty would pitch here at the end of August and make it almost through the sixth having allowed one run again. Once again this season, Ray has proven to be better on the road than in Phoenix where he's 1-7 in 14 starts with a 5.53 ERA. Since taking up with the Snakes, Ray is 5-7, 2.37 (15 starts, 90 IP) away from home.

Bettis missed matching up with Ray when the clubs met a little more than a week ago in the desert.Ray is probably happy about that since he sorta' stunk it up when he faced the Rockies while Bettis was at least serviceable with six innings and three runs allowed in a 6-3 Colorado win to pull off a sweep. That dubya evened Bettis' record against the Snakes this year after getting bombed in his 2016 debut in Phoenix, 11-6.

Umpire Notes, Mother Nature & A Free Pick
Bill Welke finishes off the set for the umpires behind the plate, the eighth time the 17-year veteran has called balls and strikes this season. Six of the previous seven games Welke has been under the mask went 'over' the totals, which would seem to help make a game in Denver an easy play to the high side. But the Michigan native has worked the plate just once here since the start of the 2010 campaign, and it finished 'under' the mark.

A cloudy afternoon is in store for the Mile High City area, but we're not expecting rain to get in the way of the game which should find a steady north breeze (in from center) from start to finish. In addition to the D-backs winning five in a row, the Rockies have dropped 7-straight at home, and those two streaks combine to make my free MLB pick an easy play on the visitors.
