Into the afternoon: Here's a breakdown of what the MLB odds are shaping up to look like tonight.

Afternoon MLB Odds Update

Our daily edition of the MLB betting odds overview continues, as we get set for a ton of baseball action this afternoon and later on tonight.

Red Sox (Doubront) vs. Yankees (Hughes)

The Yankees ended their losing streak in style, thanks to a dominant start out of ace C.C. Sabathia. Phil Hughes has a hard act to follow, but New York is still favored at -113 to secure a win in game two tonight.

After looking over the MLB odds, trends, and statistics, Joe Freda doesn't feel like the Yankees will be able to follow through again. He believes Boston will be able to jump on Hughes early and is therefore taking the underdog price (+105).

Nationals (Gonzalez) vs. Braves (Hudson)

One run separated the Nationals and Braves in the opener yesterday, with the Nationals getting some excellent relief pitching after an early exit for Stephen Strasburg. Washington held on for the 3-2 win.

We've got another good pitching encounter on our hands today, though Gio Gonzalez and Tim Hudson have failed to match their typical career numbers so far this season. Perhaps that's why Willie Bee is getting reeled in on the OVER 7.5 runs for game two of the series. Offense was hard to come by yesterday, but Willie's looking for that to change tonight.

Giants (Bumgarner) vs. Cardinals (Wainwright)

Since there's a double-header today (the first game had already started at time of writing), there's bound to be some lineup shuffling for tonight's matinee. That will make it tricky to decipher the best possible play with your sports picks.

That said, Willie Bee is again attracted to a total play between these two National League powers. You've got to love what Adam Wainwright and Madison Bumgarner have been doing in 2013, so wagering on the UNDER 7 runs seems like an extremely logical choice.

Dodgers (Greinke) vs. Rockies (Chacin)

Ron Patrick was willing to lay some chalk last night and it ended up working out in his favor. The Dodgers recovered after blowing the late lead and wound up winning 7-5 in extra innings. Today it'll be Zack Greinke and Jhhoulys Chacin on the mound.

Though L.A. were winners yesterday, they've struggled overall on the road this season to the tune of a 9-15 record. As for Colorado, they've been solid (16-12) at home, so Ron has gone with his gut here and backed the Rockies at -130.

Diamondbacks (Kennedy) vs. Cubs (Samardzija)

Believe it or not, the Cubs are one of the hottest teams around currently. They dominated the White Sox at home and have started off their series with Arizona on a high note as well. Will they keep it going with Shark on the hill?

Jeff Samardzija has been a force at times this season, but that's not swaying Joe Freda away from picking the OVER 9.5 runs to come through at the sportsbooks. If you prefer a play on a side in this spot, you can locate the Diamondbacks at +130 and the Cubs at -140.

White Sox (Quintana) vs. Athletics (Straily)

In another one of his successful MLB picks, Ron Patrick nailed the run-line in Oakland's 3-0 win last night. It wasn't easy, but the Athletics finally got on the board in the eighth and then Bartolo Colon took care of the rest.

There's every chance we could see another low-scoring affair today, as Dan Straily has looked excellent over his last two starts and Jose Quintana rarely gets shellacked. Ron's going to stick with a ML side though and is picking Oakland (-150) to make it two victories out of two in the series.

Biggest ML Favorites

Los Angeles Angels (-240) vs. Houston Astros

St. Louis Cardinals (-155) vs. San Francisco Giants

Oakland Athletics (-150) vs. Chicago White Sox

Chicago Cubs (-140) vs. Arizona Diamondbacks

Detroit Tigers (-140) at Baltimore Orioles

Morning MLB Odds Report

Red Sox (Doubront) vs. Yankees (Hughes)

What a great way to end a concerning losing streak. C.C Sabathia pitched excellently and the Yankees grabbed a 4-1 win in the series opener. It couldn't have come at a better time for Joe Girardi's reeling team or for those backing the Yanks with their MLB Picks.

It would take something of a miracle for Phil Hughes (2-3, 4.97 ERA) to match that level of production tonight, however. He'll be opposed by Felix Doubront (3-2, 5.29 ERA), with New York currently a -110 favorite.

[gameodds]3/228460/43-349-192/us[/gameodds]

Nationals (Gonzalez) vs. Braves (Hudson)

Neither Gio Gonzalez or Tim Hudson have impressed this season. Gonzalez gave up four earned runs in his latest start, while Hudson owns a poor ERA of 5.37. He was torched for six runs against Toronto his last time out.

What side will Willie Bee pick today? He was on the money with his selection yesterday, but the MLB odds are a little different this time around. The Braves are bigger favorites at -130, with Washington at +125.

Giants (Bumgarner) vs. Cardinals (Wainwright)

We'll have a double-header on our hands for tomorrow. Last night's game was postponed due to the weather, so Matt Cain and Shelby Miller will have to wait an extra day to get back on the mound. They'll be the starters for the early game.

Later on, it'll be Madison Bumgarner up against Adam Wainwright in another terrific pitching matchup. You can back the Cardinals to win at -140 for now, though there's still time for those lines to move.

[gameodds]3/228462/43-349-192/us[/gameodds]

Reds (Leake) vs. Pirates (Liriano)

Johnny Cueto was wonderful in Cincinnati's 6-0 win yesterday over Wandy Rodriguez and the Pirates. The victory now means both teams are sitting at 34-21 overall on the season.

Who will improve their record after tonight's over and done with? Francisco Liriano and Mike Leake have been very reliable for their respective ballclubs, but it's Pittsburgh (-125) that's the favorite. Joe Freda will release his MLB picks for this game shortly.

[gameodds]3/228461/43-349-192/us[/gameodds]

Dodgers (Greinke) vs. Rockies (Chacin)

Clayton Kershaw was unlucky to get a no decision last night, but the Dodgers still managed to escape with a 7-5 win in extra innings. Can they make it two out of two with Zack Greinke set to be on the mound?

We'll see soon enough. The Rockies have gotten two solid outings in a row out of Jhoulys Chacin and we wouldn't be surprised to see another quality outing against a beat up Dodgers lineup. Colorado is favored at -120.

[gameodds]3/228457/43-349-192/us[/gameodds]

Diamondbacks (Kennedy) vs. Cubs (Samardzija)

Watch out. The Cubs have now won five straight games, putting them seven games below .500 on the season. They dominated Arizona in the series opener yesterday and should have a good shot at another win with Jeff Samadrzija penciled in as the starter.

Samardzija may be 3-6, but he's rocking a rock-solid 2.85 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. Does Joe Freda believe he'll lead Chicago to another W? The home team's listed as a -130 betting odds favorite.

[gameodds]3/228458/43-349-192/us[/gameodds]

White Sox (Quintana) vs. Athletics (Straily)

It wasn't until the bottom of the eighth that runs were put on the board in yesterday's opener, but that's all Oakland needed. Bartolo Colon pitched a gem of a complete game and the Athletics finished as 3-0 victors.

Given the way Dan Straily's been performing lately, Oakland could be in line for another positive result this afternoon. He's given up just one earned run over his last 13.0 innings of work, so it's no surprise to see the Athletics at -155. It would be relatively surprising if Ron Patrick doesn't back the hosts in this spot.
