Detroit Tigers (82-59) at Kansas City Royals (73-68)
Will There Be a Let Down?
Detroit is coming off of a punishing victory of the Kansas City Royals in which they pounded out 16 runs and 26 hits. The Royals are an up and coming team, but they’re just not at that playoff level yet. After facing Anibal Sanchez, the Royals must now face another tough customer in Justin Verlander (12-10, 3.59). “JV” has had less than a storybook season, but this could possibly be a good spot for the right-hander as K.C. could be demoralized after such a convincing loss.
Not Verlander’s Season
Before the beginning of the 2013 MLB season, Justin Verlander was thought of as possibly the best pitcher in the majors. And last year, he was quite the tail for our MLB picks. There’s no doubt that he’s still one of the best, but we’ve seen a loss of confidence from Verlander this season as opposing teams have gotten out to quick leads against him.
This is a pitcher that has great stuff and his durability is second to none. After a few sub-standard performances, Verlander has come back strong in his last outing, pitching 7 shutout innings in a no-decision against Cleveland. Look for another big-time pitching performance from Verlander against a talented team in Kansas City, but with no major power.
Kansas City will try to counteract with the trio of leadoff hitter Alex Gordon, former All- Star Billy Butler, and up and comer, Eric Hosmer.
Butler is currently on a 5 game hitting streak and has an RBI streak of 4 consecutive games. A Butler-Verlander matchup could prove to be somewhat of a chess match. Hosmer on the other hand, had his 9 game hitting streak snapped yesterday, but has unlimited potential.
Detroit has one of the top two offenses in baseball and to get Verlander, coming off of a great start, at these betting odds is a gift.

New York Mets (63-76) at Cleveland Indians (75-65)
The majority of bettors will be on Cleveland in this game as the Indians are coming off of an 8-1 victory over New York on Friday, are playing at home, and are just 2 games behind Tampa Bay for the final wild card spot in the American League.
I’m Coming Home
Everyone knows that popular song that is often used in the world of sports and Mets starting pitcher Jonathan Niese (6-6, 3.66) will in fact be coming home to his home town to start against Corey Kluber (7-5, 3.54) and the Tribe.
Niese has been on top of his game, only allowing more than 3 runs in a game once since May 16th. Now, that’s something that you can “hang your hat on”, and it will be up to the New York offense to be effective as Niese should hold down the fort defensively for the Mets.
Without David Wright, Daniel Murphy has been quietly producing an especially outstanding 2nd half to this season. Murphy has hit safely in 20 of his last 22 games. Murphy is 16 for 34 in his last 8 games. Look for the hot hitting to continue. Lucas Duda has also made a late charge for the Mets without Ike Davis in the lineup. Duda is starting to get his confidence back and possesses awesome power.
Look for New York to have a better showing tonight with Niese taking the rubber.
