After Jedd Gyorko blasted two home runs en route to an 8-6 San Diego victory over the lowly Chicago Cubs, these two teams meet again for some late night west coast baseball at Petco Park on a Saturday Night.
Samardzija vs. Stults
The Cubs have the edge in starting pitching as Jeff Samardzija (7-11, 4.12) can be a lockdown pitcher at times, striking out the side. The question is “which Samardzija will show up tonight?”
I remember watching Samardzjia is a superstar wide receiver for Notre Dame during the Brady Quinn era and thinking that he should stay in football. Right now, it’s a toss up, but on such a lousy team, Samardzjia is usually reliable.
Eric Stults (8-10, 3.70) hasn’t had a decision in his last 4 starts, but he should be able to keep the Padres in this game. The Cubs aren’t overwhelming offensively and the “W” is there for the taking if Stults is up to the task. Stults has enjoyed home cooking to the tune of 5-2 with a 2.50 ERA in 12 starts at Petco Park this season and that will be tough for the Cubbies to overcome.

You can’t stop him, you can only hope to contain him; especially after last night. Many people turned into Gyorko fans after his 2 home run outburst which helped decide the DraftKings fantasy league $100,000 Sweet Spot competition.
I classify Gyorko as an average major league player with power, that can rise to the occasion in the big spot. Yesterday he delivered and tonight he faces a pitcher in Samardzija , who he hasn’t gotten a hit off of in just 3 career at-bats.
Leadoff man, Will Venable, is another player to keep your eye on. He was 3 for 4 last night with a home run 3 runs batted in. Venable is 17 for 44 in his last 10 games with 3 HR and 8 RBI.
In a short sampling, centerfielder, Junior Lake, has been a real force for the Chicago Cubs. Lake is hitting .324 with 4 HR and 11 RBI in just 34 games this season. He’s coming off of a 3 for 5 performance last night and along with Donnie Murphy (8 HR, 15 RBI, .311 BA in 61 at-bats), these two players have given the bottom of the Cubs lineup some solidity to go along with players like Anthony Rizzo.
Neither team is going anywhere, but except for the play of Chase Headley, both teams have improved dramatically offensively. This game should come down to “Will Samardzija have a standout performance against a capable and slightly better Padres team at home?” For my MLB picks, I like the Padres while little juice at Petco Park.
