The Tampa Bay Rays avoided elimination in come-from-behind fashion last night, as they prepare to host the Boston Red Sox Tuesday night. Find out why we believe that a play on the first 5 innings is the best option for our MLB picks in this matchup.

Let’s take a closer at the MLB betting odds for Game 4 of this American League Division Series at Tropicana Field, with the first pitch scheduled for 8:37 p.m. ET on TBS.

Still in the driver’s seat

Boston suffered a 5-4 defeat to Tampa Bay in the third game of this best-of-five series last night, but it still owns a 2-1 advantage heading into this affair.

The Red Sox have won seven of their previous eight postseason series when capturing the first two games, which can’t be ignored when making your sports picks Tuesday.

Late-game heroics

Tampa Bay used home runs from Jose Lobaton and Evan Longoria to overcome an early three-run deficit and extend this series, which gives the ball club a ton of momentum in hopes of forcing a Game 5 in Boston.

The Rays are trying to become the fifth AL team in the last 23 opportunities to win a Division Series after dropping the first two games.

Peavy

Red Sox starting pitcher Jake Peavy (12-5, 4.17 ERA) earned a 15-5 road win over the Colorado Rockies in his last regular season outing on Sept. 25, as he allowed five runs and eight hits over six frames.

The right-hander went 5-5 with a 5.27 ERA in 14 road outings, with opposing hitters batting .259 against him.

In six lifetime appearances versus the Rays, Peavy has compiled a 3-1 record and 4.91 ERA.

Hellickson

Rays starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson (12-10, 5.17 ERA) alternated wins and losses over his last three appearances, which included a 6-3 road defeat to the Toronto Blue Jays on Sept. 27.

The right-hander went 6-3 with a 4.77 ERA in 16 home games (15 starts), issuing 22 walks and striking out 74 batters in 88.2 combined frames.

In 13 games (12 starts) versus the Red Sox, Hellickson has tallied a 4-2 record and 4.21 ERA.

Prediction

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Rays in the first five innings with their MLB picks, as Hellickson has compiled a 2.42 ERA in 17 career starts when throwing on six or more days’ rest, while Peavy is 9-13 with a 5.94 ERA when taking the mound indoors.
