Wherever you look, the Rays are favored behind David Price at home, though the prices vary. Some books have Boston at -135, while others have a line of -140 available. The Red Sox are listed at roughly +125 to win, while the total is holding steady at seven runs.
Boston Red Sox (Peavy)
What's going on with the Red Sox? Amazingly enough, the defending World Series champions are suffering through an eight-game losing streak, and are currently in last place (20-27 overall) in the AL East.
After getting swept at home by Detroit, and then Toronto as well, Boston couldn't find the winning touch once again in the series opener in Tampa Bay. The Red Sox fell 1-0 in extra innings.
Now, it's up to Jake Peavy to try and turn around the luck. Peavy is 1-2 with a 4.33 ERA and 1.50 WHIP so far this season, so it hasn't exactly been the best start for the right-hander.
Peavy was rocking a 3.09 ERA through his first seven starts, but he's been poor over his last two, allowing a total of 20 hits and 11 earned runs in 10 and 1/3 combined innings against Detroit and Minnesota.
Hitting wise, the Red Sox have been surprisingly bad.
They're ranked 20th in runs scored, and don't have one regular who's hitting
over .300. Over the past seven days Boston has hit .218 as a team.
Tampa Bay Rays (Price)
While the Rays aren't on quite a losing run like Boston, they still haven't enjoyed a good start to their season either. They're at 21-28 overall, and a forgettable month of May that's seen them go 9-12 so far hasn't helped matters.
Following a four-game losing run, Tampa Bay closed out their series with Oakland with a win and then carried that over in a 1-0 victory over the Red Sox last night.
A third straight victory could be in the cards with David Price set to pick up the start, though the southpaw hasn't been as dominant as we've seen him be in the past.
Price is at 4-4 with a 4.28 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 2014, with inconsistency really plaguing him. He followed up a complete-game win in Seattle by getting tagged for 11 hits and five earned runs (two homers) in a 6-2 loss to the Angels six days ago.
The Rays haven't been too good offensively either, with
James Loney the only one batting over .300. Tampa Bay is ranked 27th in slugging
and is in the bottom half of the MLB in the three other major offensive
categories (runs, batting average, on base percentage) as well.
Neither of these teams have played well enough to warrant our serious attention when making our MLB picks on the money-line.
So, with that said we'll look towards the 'under' instead. Price and Peavy haven't been showcasing their best stuff, but they're both capable of shutting down offenses on their day.
We mainly like this play because of the ineptitude of both teams' hitters recently. As we mentioned, the Red Sox are hitting .218 over the last week, but the Rays have been even worse at .197. Put it all together, and we foresee the 'under' cashing big as our baseball pick tonight.
