Friday’s MLB betting has a pair of right-handed starters squaring off, with New York’s David Phelps (4-4, 4.08 ERA) opposing Tampa Bay’s Roberto Hernandez (4-7, 5.02 ERA). Who do MLB odds say has the advantage?
Rays, Longoria hold off Yanks
Rays third baseman Evan Longoria cracked a pair of homers in Thursday’s affair, finishing with three RBIs. Tampa Bay’s Desmond Jennings poked two doubles in a 3-for-4 outing from the leadoff spot, with the Rays edging New York in hits, 14-6.
Yankees mates Robinson Cano and Chris Stewart were both held to 0-for-3 nights, uniting to leave six men on base. New York’s Andy Pettitte lasted 6 2/3 frames for his staff’s loss, while the contest’s combined 11 runs leaped OVER the ‘total’ of eight.
Phelps goes six in defeat
Phelps picked up his second loss in four starts with Saturday’s 6-2 defeat for New York as a +111 road dog against the Los Angeles Angels. The 26-year-old gave up four runs over six innings, allowing nine hits.
New York’s Brett Gardner and Jayson Nix drove in one run each, with Gardner poking a triple in a 1-for-4 night. Yankees outfielder Ichiro Suzuki went 2-for-4, including his sixth double of the year.
Hernandez shelled at home
Hernandez fell short as 140 home ‘chalk’ with Sunday’s 5-3 setback for Tampa Bay to the Kansas City Royals. The eighth-year hurler allowed nine hits in 5 2/3 frames of action, giving up four runs.
Tampa Bay’s Luke Scott and Desmond Jennings logged RBI’s in the first inning, getting their club out to an early 2-1 lead. Rays catcher Jose Lobaton drilled a late pinch-hit homer, finishing 1-for-2.
Back New York as short ‘chalk’
Bet365 opened Phelps as a 125 home favorite, while early action on Tampa Bay dropped the MLB odds to -117. The ‘total’ was first listed at 8.5, moving north to nine with a minus 115 tag added to the UNDER.
For my MLB picks, I am backing Phelps and the Yankees in this spot, laying the short ‘chalk’ at home.
Phelps picked up a victory over Hernandez in May’s 9-4 triumph for New York as a 104 road dog in Tampa Bay. The matchup saw Phelps last 7 2/3 frames, while the Yankees jumped out to a 5-0 lead on Hernandez’ arm.
New York’s Robinson Cano is 11-for-24 facing Hernandez, while mates Jayson Nix and Brett Gardner have one homer each in a combined 19 trips. Tampa Bay is 2-7 in its last nine spots against right-handed starters, while going 0-4 in Hernandez’ last four outings as a road dog.
Phelps has had some recent inconsistency, but should look to settle down returning to his home hill here. New York went 2-0 in the Missouri native’s last pair of home outings against American League clubs, with Phelps allowing just one run over the span’s 13 frames.
Look for the Yankees to answer back here after Thursday’s defeat, evening up this set at a low premium.
