The Boston Red Sox have won five of six meetings against the Tampa Bay Rays this season. Tonight they open up a three-game series Monday night.

Let’s take a closer look at the MLB betting lines
for this American League East matchup at Tropicana Field, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Offensive supremacy

Boston leads baseball with 336 runs scored and 330 RBIs, as they won two of three from the Los Angeles Angels over the weekend, including a 10-5 victory as -165 home favorites Sunday afternoon.

The Red Sox are 7-5 as MLB odds road underdogs of +100 to +125 this season, with the OVER cashing in seven of those 12 opportunities.

Back in fourth place

Tampa Bay suffered a 10-7 defeat to the Baltimore Orioles as -137 home favorites Sunday—dropping the club to fourth place in the AL East standings—four games behind  tonight’s opponent.

The Rays are 9-4 as home favorites of -125 to -150 during the 2013 campaign, with the OVER going 7-6 in that situation.

Red Sox starting pitcher John Lackey (3-5, 2.79 ERA) has watched the club drop his last two outings, as he failed to earn a decision in a 3-2 setback at home to the Texas Rangers last time out, allowing one run and five hits over six frames.

The right-hander is 1-4 with a 4.56 ERA in five road appearances, with opposing hitters batting .262 against him.

In 20 career games versus the Rays, Lackey has compiled a 12-7 record and 4.30 ERA,  including a 4-5 mark and 6.88 ERA in nine efforts at this ballpark.

Rays starting pitcher Alex Cobb (6-2, 2.39 ERA) has led the squad to victories in his last three outings, but he didn’t earn a decision in a 3-0 road win over the Detroit Tigers, as he scattered five hits over 7.2 shutout innings.

The right-hander has tallied a perfect 4-0 record and 1.91 ERA in six home outings, issuing just nine walks and collecting 43 strikeouts in 42.1 combined frames.

In five career appearances versus the Red Sox, Cobb has gone 2-2 with a 2.79 ERA, including a no-decision effort in a 4-3 home loss on May 16.

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Rays as one of their MLB picks Monday, as they’ve won six of their last seven home games as a home favorite of -110 to -150 with Cobb on the hill.
