The Los Angeles Angels notched a second straight win over the Texas Rangers with Saturday’s 8-3 home victory, cashing for my followers at plus 123 MLB odds.
Angels, Trumbo cruise
Angels slugger Mark Trumbo cracked a two-run homer in Saturday’s win, giving his club an early 3-1 lead. Los Angeles’ Grant Green and Chris Ianetta united to hit 3-for-6, combining to log four RBIs.
Rangers mates A.J. Pierzynski and Elvis Andrus both came away with 2-for-4 nights, poking a long ball and double, respectively. Texas finished with four errors, while the contest’s 11 runs lifted the ‘Over’ to 2-0 for the series.
Vargas lit up at home
Vargas (8-6, 3.80 ERA) logged his first loss in four starts with Tuesday’s 7-1 defeat for Los Angeles as a 120 home dog against the Tampa Bay Rays. The 30-year-old was shelled for five runs on 10 hits, departing after four innings.
Angels outfielder J.B. Shuck was held to a 0-for-4 outing from the leadoff spot, striking out twice. Los Angeles was edged in hits, 15-4, while the lopsided affair’s combined eight runs jumped ‘Over’ the closing ‘total’ of 7.5.
Tepesch returns to start
Tepesch (4-6, 4.67 ERA) came back to MLB action in Monday’s 4-2 road defeat for the Rangers to the Oakland Athletics, tossing 3 1/3 frames of late relief. The rookie allowed held Oakland’s lineup scoreless, while allowing one hit.
Tepesch’ latest starts came with Double-A’s Frisco RoughRiders, giving up one earned run over a pair of outings (6 IP). The latest affair saw a no-decision logged on August 30th, tossing three strikeouts in a 3-1 victory for Frisco over the Corpus Christi Hooks.
Back the Rangers on Sunday
Early MLB odds opened Vargas as a 114 home favorite with wagers on Texas moving the MLB odds to minus 105. The ‘total’ was first set at nine, while initial ‘Under’ betting dropped the number a ‘hook’ to 8.5.
I am adding Tepesch and the Rangers to Sunday’s sports picks, shifting gears from Saturday’s winning pick and agreeing with the early ‘steam.’
Tepesch has had his moments in road outings for Texas, holding foes to a .286 OBP. The Kansas City native has given up just three homers in 27 IP of daytime action, while facing an Angels club that has gone just 2-7 in its last nine home dates against righty starters.
Vargas has given up 15 earned runs over his last four home dates, with Los Angeles coming away with a 1-3 mark in that stretch. Texas is 9-4 in its last 13 road contests against southpaw starters, while Vargas has given up a 1.39 WHIP over six afternoon outings.
Texas’ Ian Kinsler has one homer and five doubles in a 12-for-38 career mark against Vargas, while hitting a warm 3-for-9 in the series thus far. Look for the Rangers to end their skid in this spot, cashing at a low premium here, for your MLB picks.
