The Philadelphia Phillies have fallen behind early against the Atlanta Braves in their first  two games of the 2013 MLB campaign, but things may turn around in the series finale Thursday night.

Let’s take a closer look at the MLB betting odds for this National League East matchup, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET at Turner Field.

Falling behind

Philadelphia has allowed five first-inning runs in dropping its first two games of the season, which includes a 9-2 setback Wednesday, while going OVER the total in each of those contests.

The Phillies are still 29-22 in the month of April the last two-plus campaigns, with the OVER going 27-23-1 in that situation.

Off with a bang

Atlanta has scored 16 runs in its first two games without longtime third baseman Chipper Jones, who retired at the end of the 2012 season.  Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman is leading the charge with five hits in seven at-bats and collecting six RBIs.

Over the last two-plus seasons, the Braves are 89-71 in the first half of the season, with the OVER going 77-74-9 in that situation.

Something about April

Cliff Lee has compiled a dominating 15-8 record and 2.95 ERA in 34 career starts in April, including a 1.96 ERA and holding opposing hitters to a .179 average a season ago.

MLB handicappers will likely find value in backing the left-hander in this spot when looking over the SBR Odds page, considering he’s gone 3-1 with a 0.95 ERA in his last five outings versus the Braves.

Quite a run

I’m not surprised that the Braves are listed as home favorites in this spot, as they’ve won Kris Medlen’s last 23 regular-season starts, while going 35-17 at home in their last 52 opportunities.

Medlen suffered through a difficult 2013 Spring Training—finishing with a 1-2 record and 7.23 ERA in six outings.  The right-hander suggested that he was simply working on his delivery and figuring out his pitches during that particular period.

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Phillies as one of their pro baseball picks Thursday, as they’ve rattled off nine straight seasons with a winning record on the road, which includes winning 15 of Lee’s last 19 starts away from Philadelphia versus teams with a winning record.
