MLB Picks Of The Day: Winning ML Plays As Aces Hit The Mound

Masahiro Tanaka

As we approach the month of August, we're getting to a pivotal part of the summer as teams are jockeying for position in their respective divisions. Here are some really appealing picks for our Picks of the Day for Wednesday.

New York Yankees vs. Houston Astros
Although the Astros (54-46) have had the New York Yankees (52-48) number in the past, New York has been dominant in this series, have won 3 straight games, and 8 out of their last 10 games to reach a season high 4 games over .500. While the Yankees look to rebuild, they better think about this season as they're right in the thick of things, just 6 1/2 games behind the division leading Baltimore Orioles. New York has played with the lead for most of this series and when you hit that Yankees bullpen, it's "light's out".

Perfect Timing For Tanaka
He wasn't getting run support in the beginning of the season, but Masahiro Tanaka has really had an outstanding season as the Yankees pitching staff has surprised some people.

So far this season, Tanaka is 7-2 with a 3.00 ERA. Remember, this is a pitcher that had 26 consecutive wins in Japan before ever stepping foot on a baseball diamond in the US. If not for lack of run support, he would easily have double figure wins.

Manager, Joe Girardi, has really taken care of Tanaka and not looked to raise his pitch count when it wasn't necessary. His last start was picture perfect as he pitched 6 innings and allowed just 4 hits against the San Francisco Giants. Girardi wants Tanaka to stay healthy and we're seeing a somewhat revitalized Masahiro Tanaka who possesses more confidence and energy.

Overall, in his last 2 starts, Tanaka has pitched 12 innings and allowed 2 runs. Neither start was for more than 90 pitches. The games direction will be the deciding factor for Tanaka's pitch count.

The Yankees Offense is Waking Up
New York has been getting off to early leads and that was the case in their 6-3 victory over the Astros yesterday. The bottom half of the lineup continues to lead the way, but guys like Mark Teixiera and Jacoby Ellsbury got much needed hits as they've been slumping mightily. Carlos Beltran has also been a factor with 2 more hits as his average is up to  .309!. I look for Tex and some of these high priced players to really start to pour it on in as we only have a bit over 2 months remaining in the regular season.

One thing I have noticed is the great Jose Altuve is just not the same player against the Yankees that he is against the rest of the league. Altuve is also a player that hits over .400 on the road and this series, he's been ineffective. Altuve is 1 for 8 in this series and is 2 for 6 against Tanaka with an HR and a  RBI. I like New York in this game as good pitching wins games and the MLB odds are appealing.

Chicago White Sox vs. Chicago Cubs
After another White Sox win over the superior Chicago Cubs (59-40), the White Sox have reached the .500 mark at 50-50. You know when guys like Adam Eaton are hitting home runs, your luck and momentum are working for you and this is the case for the White Sox. From a Chicago Cubs perspective, this is a winning team, but a team that got out of the gates fast at the beginning of the season, but certainly doesn't look like the best team in baseball. The Cubbies were projected to win 91 1/2 games this season; far more than any other team in the majors. In my mind, they've underachieved with the talent that they have and pitchers such as Arrieta, Lester, and Lackey as their starting pitchers. With all of that said, odds makers are still giving the Cubs the respect as they're a huge -214 betting favorite MLB pick. This is the best line that I could find as some sportsbooks have them listed at -230!.

Extreme Odds
Jason Hammel (9-5, 3.35 ERA) get's the start for the Cubs and if he can hold the White Sox lineup in check, this should be a win for the Cubs, but it's far from a guarantee.

Lately, Hammel has pitched well as he's allowed 5 runs in his last 3 starts. The only negative thing that can be said about Hammel is that he's not going to provide more than 5 to 6 innings per start (7 if he's pitching exceptionally) and the Cubs bullpen would need to hold down the fort the rest of the way.

Expect a good 6 innings out of Jason Hammel as the White Sox offense is nothing special. It's just the Cubs offense hasn't showed up the last couple of games and this is why they've lost. Guys like Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo need to have big games and not be embarrassed by pitchers the caliber of James "Big Game" Shields. Even though the Cubs have been unpredictable and the White Sox have been hot, I'm going to fade what the bettor should do as I'm going to side with the team that's expected to win the World Series and I'm going to lay a massive amount juice along with it.
