We have less than 1 week remaining in the regular season and some teams are still scrambling for a post-season berth. That's how tight this race has been. Let's take a look at Wednesday's slate and make a couple of wise MLB Picks.

Chicago Cubs vs. Pittsburgh Pirates

Destroying the Competition
While I like to take a team that has something to play for, I also like to go in the direction of the teams that are hot at the right time and let's face it, the Chicago Cubs, who are on a modest 3 game winning streak, are simply destroying the competition as they are by far the best team in the majors at 101-56.

They face a Pittsburgh Pirates (77-80) that has thrown in the towel and has really never got it going since the beginning of the season. With Jake Arrieta (19-7, 2.85 ERA) taking the mound, he might still have his sights set on a 20 win season and this Cubs pitching staff is simply relentless.

He hasn't been as good as his Cy Young winning season last year, but there hasn't been much of a dropoff for Arrieta. He's allowed the opposition to hit just .186 off of him and that has to be near the top of the Major League's where pitchers are concerned. He's not going to allow the long ball and has won 7 out of his last 9 decisions thanks to a strong Cubs offense in supporting his cause. Arrieta has struggled a bit down the stretch but is coming off of a flawless performance in a 5-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. In that game, he pitched 7 innings and allowed just 5 hits while striking out 10 batters. I see the Pittsburgh Pirates having a tough time in dealing with Jake Arrieta as he's been one of the key figures to the Cubbies success.

The Dynamic Duo
I'm not referring to Batman, I'm referring to the two "bat men" that have been crushing the baseball all season long and forming the best 1-2 punch in the game in Kris Bryant (39 HR, 101 RBI, .295 BA) and Anthony Rizzo (31 HR, 105 RBI, .292 BA). What these two players also share is their ability to be dominant against Pittsburgh. Rizzo is hitting .439 with 6 HR and 18 RBI in 66 at-bats against the Bucs while Bryant is hitting .368 with 5 HR and 10 RBI in 57 at-bats against the Pirates. Could it get any better?

New York Mets vs. Miami Marlins

Could It Get Any Easier?
The New York Mets (84-74) ,who are the top wild card team, didn't play with any passion in the first game of this series due to the Fernandez tragedy, but have since moved on as they have everything to play for while the Marlins aren't in a mindset to play baseball and looking to finish out the string. That couldn't be more evident in the Mets' 12-1 destruction of the Fish last night. I hate to be blunt, but I think all the New York Mets have to do is scratch a few runs together and they can pick up an easy victory at a good betting price in this game.

The Quitest 30 Home Runs in Baseball
We talked about the outstanding play of Asdrubal Cabrera when we picked the Mets yesterday, but what's really overlooked is the power of Curtis Granderson. People look at his sub-par batting average, but don't realize that was a guy that hit back to back 40 home run seasons for the Yankees and now is delivering the long ball on a regular basis for the Amazins.

In his last 9 games in which he played the complete game, Granderson has hit safely in 8 of these games and has 4 HR and 10 RBI. He's the type of hitter that can come up with the big blast when least expected and in this case, he's been hitting on a regular basis. Marlins Park is a tough park to hit homers out of, but no park is to0 big for Curtis Granderson as he's been a key component in the Mets offense as of a late.

Look for New York to keep playing hungry for your MLB picks, while they put the heartbroken Marlins out of their misery to wait for this season to come to a close to mourn.
