Mark Lathrop's hot May continues, and he finds two games on the short Monday MLB betting card with serious value. Read on as he breaks down two matchups - one with value on the total and one with value on the side.

The Colorado Rockies offense has heated up on the road as the team has won two series in a row on a massive 10-game road trip out east. In this game, they start a four-game series against the Phillies who have lost 8 of their last 10 games.

The Rockies will face Jerad Eickhoff of the Phillies on Monday in the first game of their series, and Eickhoff has not won a decision in 8 starts this year. Eickhoff has had a terrible time with control on the season, and his BB/9 has climbed from 1.92 in 2016 to 3.55 in 2017 over his first 45.2 innings. Even though his FIP is an average 4.05, Eickhoff’s WHIP of 1.42 and BAA of .255 is well over last season’s averages, where he put up an ERA of 3.65. His struggles have really started in May when the weather has gotten warmer, and he has put up a 6.46 ERA and .299 BAA. His split of a .505 slugging percentage against lefties really sums up what has gotten him into trouble on the year.

The reason I’m not just blindly backing the Rockies in this start is two words, “Spot Starter”. It appears as if Jeff Hoffman will get the start for the Rockies, his second of the year. He actually did a respectable job against the Dodgers on May 11th, giving up just 3 earned runs over 5.1 innings pitched. He did give up a home run though, and has in each of his two major league appearances on the season. Pitching in Philadelphia won’t help that, and with the combination of Eickhoff’s control issues the value here is to take the Over of 8.5 at Heritage with two very average pitchers on the mound.

Chicago White Sox vs Arizona Diamondbacks

The White Sox travel to Arizona after absolutely pummeling the Mariners at Safeco Field over the weekend. They face the best pitcher they’ve seen in a week when they start a series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

The White Sox have been spoiled over the last few day as they have seen AAA pitching in Seattle as the Mariners try to fill in bodies for their injured starting rotation. To their credit, the White Sox took total advantage and scored 22 runs over their last two games combined. They’ll face Zack Greinke in this game, who has been excellent all year long and hot of late.

Greinke comes into this game after his worst game in a month, which was actually a win against the New York Mets in which he gave up 4 earned runs. He struck out 8 and only walked two though, which kept up his excellent 66/11 K/BB rate on the year. Greinke’s K-BB% of 23.8% would be the best he has ever put up in over an entire season if he kept it up, and his .199 BAA and 2.82 ERA at Chase Field is awesome. Just from the extreme change in competence alone after seeing Mariners pitching all weekend, the White Sox will be off balance. For that reason I’m going to go ahead and lay the run line here and take the Diamondbacks -1.5 at the best line available come Monday night as a Monday MLB Pick of the Day.
