Except for the Detroit Tigers playing a make-up game, which could affect the wild-card situation in the AL, this is the last day of the MLB Regular Season and teams are still fighting for a playoff spot. Let's see how and if this comes into play when we provide our MLB Picks of the Day for Sunday.

Detroit Tigers vs Atlanta Braves

"Hold the Phone!"

The Detroit Tigers (86-74) didn't do themselves any favors yesterday with a loss 5-3 loss to Atlanta. Although the Tigers are officially 1 1/2 games behind the Blue Jays and Orioles for the two wild card spots, Detroit is only one game behind each team in the loss column and they have a game to make up if they win today.

They couldn't ask for an easier opponent in the Atlanta Braves (67-93). Atlanta is just 30-50 at Turner Field. Can starter, Justin Verlander (16-8, 3.10 ERA) and the Detroit Tigers extend this MLB season? They're going to need either the Blue Jays or Orioles to lose a game, but they must do their part with a win today.

Big Players Live For Big Moments

The stage is set and it doesn't get any bigger than this. Detroit has a bunch of free swingers with the best player in baseball in Miguel Cabrera leading the way. Miggy is hitting .500 in his last 24 at-bats to go along with 4 HR and 14 RBI. Cabrera also has the Braves number as he's 4 for 9 with 2 HR and 3 RBI against Atlanta. Miggy has had at least one home run in 3 out of his last 4 games and RBI in 5 out of his last 6 games. This, to go along with a 9 game hitting streak. This guy is simply the best and comes up big during crucial moments in a game. I expect him to come up big in this spot as this implication of this game are huge.

As for Justin Verlander, he's the guy that the Tigers want starting a game like this. He's had a bounce back season and has re-established himself as one of the best pitchers in the American League. In his last 8 starts, JV hasn't allowed more than 3 runs in any start. In 7 of those starts, he's allowed 2 runs or less. He's also coming off of a huge 12-0 win over Cleveland in which he pitched 7 innings, struck out 12 batters, and only allowed 4 hits.

Look for the Tigers to "stay alive" with a win today against a weak Atlanta club.

CH Cubs vs Cincinnati Reds

From Start to Finish

From the beginning of the regular season until the end, the Chicago Cubs (102-58) have been the best team in the majors by far. Kris Bryant appears to be headed for an NL MVP Award and the Chicago Cubs have a real chance at breaking a streak that lasts over 100 years in which they haven't won a World Series.

Kyle Hendricks

One of the main reasons why the Cubs are so successful is the balance of a great pitching staff and offense. Today's starter, Kyle Hendricks, has been a major part of Chicago's success as he's been dominant.

For the season, Hendricks is 16-8 with a 1.99 ERA. ERA is the most important statistic for a pitcher as they can't control run support and Hendricks has "owned" the opposition. He's also owned Cincinnati, allowing just 2 earned runs in 12 innings pitched. Hendricks has held opposing batters to just a .204 batting average. He'll have to face the likes of Joey Votto, who is having an MVP-like season, but top to bottom, this Cincinnati lineup leaves a lot to be desired.

While he hasn't finished the season strong, going 3 for his last 18 at-bats, Kris Bryant has been a beast all season long and has lived up to the hype since he's come up from the minors two seasons ago.

Bryant has 39 HR, 102 RBI, and a .292 BA. This is a player who comes up with timely hits. The Cubs weren't a great team until Bryant entered the scene and that should tell you all that you need to know. On the road, Bryant has been totally destructive with 22 HR, 61 RBI, and a .306 BA. He's also hitting .360 with 10 HR and 25 RBI in 75 at-bats against the Reds.

Look for Chicago to finish out the regular season with a bang and a win here today, for your MLB pick, against a Cincinnati team that's packed it in a long time ago.
