Los Angeles’ Jered Weaver (3-5, 3.63 ERA) is slated to face Oakland’s A.J. Griffin (8-6, 3.68 ERA) in a duel of right-handed hurlers.

A’s stay hot, Angels slide
Oakland finished last week’s action with a pair of home triumphs over the Boston Red Sox, capping off a 12-5 stretch since June 25. Sunday’s finale saw the Athletics pull out a 3-2 win in 11 frames, with Athletics slugger Josh Donaldson driving in Chris Young with a walkoff single.
Los Angeles ended its first half in the opposite direction, swept in last weekend’s road set with the Seattle Mariners. The Angels were edged by a combined margin of 18-6, with outfielder Josh Hamilton held to 1-for-12 mark.
Weaver shelled in defeat
Jered Weaver logged his fourth loss in seven starts with Saturday’s 6-0 setback for Los Angeles in Seattle, failing to cash as a 102 road dog. The 30-year-old allowed four runs on nine hits, lasting 5 2/3 innings.
Angels sluggers Albert Pujols and Mark Trumbo were both held to 0-for-4 nights, with Pujols leaving three men on base. Los Angeles’ Mike Trout drilled a triple, while mates Howie Kendrick and Alberto Callaspo hit a combined 4-for-7.
Griffin shuts down Sox
Griffin saw action on the same night, with Oakland notching a 3-0 victory as 122 home ‘chalk’ over the Red Sox. The second-year hurler allowed six hits over eight innings, while closer Grant Balfour tossed the final frame en route to his 25th save.
Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes drove in one run from the cleanup spot, finishing with a 2-for-3 night. Oakland’s Derek Norris drilled a solo shot homer, with the A’s edging Boston in hits, 8-7.
Back the A’s as road dogs
The MLB odds at William Hill opened Weaver as a 135 home favorite, while first setting the ‘total’ at 7 ½ (OVER minus 115). The weather forecast in Anaheim calls for 75 degrees, with partly cloudy skies and calm winds.
I am backing Oakland and Griffin as part of Friday’s sports picks, looking for the A’s to cash at a plus price.
Griffin has held foes to a stingy 1.05 WHIP and .261 OBP over his 10 road starts, holding the Angels to one run over eight frames in April’s most recent visit to “The Big A.” Oakland has cashed at a 9-3 clip in Griffin’s last 12 starts as an underdog, while going 6-1 in the righty’s last seven outings on five days of rest.
Weaver has been too inconsistent to back as ‘chalk’ here, picking up just one winning decision in six starts against American League foes. Oakland’s Jed Lowrie has poked a trio of doubles in 12 at-bat’s facing Weaver’s arm, while the A’s have hit .264 against right-handed pitching on the road.
Look for Oakland’s lineup to hang just enough runs here to notch a cashed ticket here, adding to the club’s 21-8 mark in its last 29 series openers.
