After their four-game winning streak came to an end last night, the Rangers will hope to start a new run this evening. Who are the MLB odds favoring at Petco?
The MLB odds are eerily similar to what we saw last night, with the Rangers classified as small -110 ML favorites to win and thus even up the series at a game apiece. That leaves San Diego as a small home dog again (+100 to +105).
Once again we see a total of seven runs on the board, with Andrew Cashner and Yovani Gallardo set to toe the rubber in game two of the series this evening.
San Diego Padres (Cashner)
Yesterday's series opener was a huge success for the Padres, as they won 7-0 behind an excellent outing from Tyson Ross. San Diego is now three games under .500 at 64-67, putting them 9.5 games back of the division-leading Dodgers.
In game two of the series tonight, Andrew Cashner will be the starter, and he has been a mess for the most part this season. He's won just five games all year long (5-13 win-loss record) while recording a 4.05 ERA and 1.38 WHIP. Cashner has struggled to keep his pitch count down this season, especially as of late, and that's led to some very worrying performances.
Nonetheless, the one positive is that Cashner has pitched far better at home throughout 2015; he owns a 3.36 ERA over 10 starts at Petco, as opposed to his bad 4.55 ERA on the road. He's yet to face the Rangers this season, but this isn't the worst matchup in the world, considering Cashner can rack up strikeouts and faces a Texas team that whiffs with the best of them.
Texas Rangers (Gallardo)
The hot run came to an end last night, as the Rangers were left baffled against Ross and were only able to muster up three hits in total. Texas, however, has been surging in a big way in recent weeks and all of a sudden have a legitimate chance of reaching the playoffs; in fact, the Rangers currently hold the second Wildcard spot.
With so much on the line, Texas would love to get a quality start out of Yovani Gallardo, who has been solid for the most part this season. He's holding a 11-9 record, 3.14 ERA and 1.34 WHIP thus far on the year and has pitched 11 and 1/3 innings of scoreless ball ahead of tonight's start on the road in San Diego. The 29-year-old just wrapped up an excellent month of August in which he went 4-0 with a 1.98 ERA.
Gallardo was decent in his one meeting with the Padres this season, going 5 and 2/3 innings while allowing six hits and one run, with four walks and three strikeouts. On the whole, the right-hander is 4-5 with a 3.26 ERA in 14 starts away from Arlington in 2015.
Though Petco Park favors pitchers in general, we don't really trust either one of these righties, so we're going to be backing these two offenses to come through and help the game's total finish above seven runs.
Cashner and Gallardo are both susceptible to getting blown up, and there will be a lot of power on display at the plate this evening in the form of Prince Fielder, Adrian Beltre, Mitch Moreland, Justin Upton and Matt Kemp. We could see a few home runs tonight, which only adds appeal to the thought of taking the OVER.
So, that's exactly where we'll go with our MLB picks. Let's fade these two starters and hope for a relatively big offensive explosion at the dish. Take the OVER.
