Afternoon MLB Odds Update
Check out what kind of movement we've seen in the MLB odds throughout the day.
Some games have already started today, but there's still a host of others coming up that we've covered.
The Subway Series is here, with the Yankees and Mets set to start off the proceedings tonight. The odds have the Bronx Bombers at -110, with the Mets at +100 and the total at 7.5 runs.
With his sports picks for game of this series, Ron Patrick is backing Phil Hughes and the Yankees. They have the superior bullpen and hitting, which Ron thinks cancels out the advantage the Mets have being in their own ballpark.
Willie Bee has opted to side with the Red Sox, but he's not about to take on -155 in chalk. He's going with Boston to grab the win on the run-line, meaning they must win by two or more runs for the wager to come through.
Clay Buchholz has been scratched from his start, with Alfredo Aceves set to take his place. He hasn't looked too good in limited appearances this season, but that's not stopping Willie here.
We've got one heck of a pitching matchup between C.J. Wilson and Zack Greinke for tonight's series opener between the Angels and Dodgers. The Angels are barely favored at -110.
For this Freeway Series opener, Ron Patrick is taking the visitors to get this party started off on the right foot. Given how good the Angels are playing their best baseball of the season, having won eight straight games, it'd be hard to fade them at the moment.
The Giants have won just one of their last six games when acting as road favorites. Today Jeff Grant doesn't think they're the team worth backing with your sports picks – he's rolling with the Athletics at +105.
Dan Straily was mighty impressive in his latest start and Oakland would be thrilled to get anything close to that against Buster Posey and the Giants. Madison Bumgarner has been very solid for San Francisco this season, but Jeff is sticking with the home team.
A Windy City showdown pits the Cubs against the White Sox. Though Jeff Samardzija doesn't really have the record to show for it, he's kept his team in a number of games this season.
This series is being tracked by Willie Bee and for game one he's honing in on a total play. Despite the fact these two offenses lack much firepower, he's picking the OVER 7.5 runs as one of his MLB picks of the day.
Padres (Richard) vs. Mariners (Harang)
Here's another series that Jeff Grant is keeping an eye out on. Game one will feature two guys that have been struggling majorly this season, Clayton Richard and Aaron Harang, who both have ERAs north of 8.50.
Not much separates these two teams when it comes to the MLB odds, but the Mariners have been pinned as small home favorites. However, Jeff is putting his faith in the Padres (+105) to get the road victory.
Biggest ML Favorites
Tampa Bay Rays (-190) vs. Miami Marlins
Boston Red Sox (-160) vs. Philadelphia Phillies
Colorado Rockies (-140) at Houston Astros
Texas Rangers (-140) at Arizona Diamondbacks
Seattle Mariners (-120) vs. San Diego Padres
Yankees (Hughes) vs. Mets (Niese)
The Yankees are once again the team to be rooting for in the Big Apple this season. The Mets were able to close out their series against Atlanta with a win, but they're still a poor 18-29 overall.
Fortunately for the Mets, they'll have a good chance of taking one from the Yankees, considering Phil Hughes has not been able to locate his best stuff by any stretch of the imagination. Ron Patrick is analyzing the first game of this series, which has the Yankees favored by -115 on most MLB odds boards.
Phillies (Cloyd) vs. Red Sox (Aceves)
Alfredo Aceves picks up another spot start today in Boston's series opener with Philadelphia. The Red Sox just took three of four from Cleveland and will be hoping to carry over that momentum against the Phillies.
Philadelphia turns to young Tyler Cloyd, who has given up two runs in each of his first two starts this season. He got his first win of 2013 against Miami in his latest outing, but obviously faces a much tougher challenge at Fenway.
Angels (Wilson) vs. Dodgers (Greinke)
Here's another crosstown rivalry series that Ron Patrick is following. He'll have to choose between C.J. Wilson (4-3, 3.39 ERA) and Zack Greinke (2-1, 3.48 ERA), both of whom are savvy starters who know how to get the job done.
The Angels are on a hot streak at the moment, having won eight straight games, so we aren't too surprised to see them favored here at a price of -115. The Dodgers can be located at +105.
Giants (Bumgarner) vs. Athletics (Straily)
Which version of Dan Straily are we going to get this afternoon? The one who has a season ERA of 5.73, or the guy that absolutely shut down the Rangers (7.0 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 5 K) in his latest start?
The Athletics (+110) are hoping Straily's latest gem will help him turn things around after such a worrisome start to the year. He'll be opposed by San Francisco's Madison Bumgarner, who's 4-2 with 2.89 ERA in 2013.
Braves (Hudson) vs. Blue Jays (Buehrle)
After a dominating series in New York, the Braves next travel to Toronto to do battle with the Blue Jays. For now the MLB odds have Atlanta pinned as a -115 favorite with Tim Hudson on the mound.
The Blue Jays need to get a quality start out of Mark Buehrle, much like the one he recorded at home against Tampa Bay five days ago. His overall numbers (1-3, 5.90 ERA, 1.41 WHIP) still leave a lot to be desired though, so we can't wait to find out what Joe Freda is thinking in this spot.
Cubs (Samardzija) vs. White Sox (Quintana)
It's a Windy City get-together tonight, with the White Sox set to act as hosts. Currently they sit at 24-24 overall and 13-10 at home, while the Cubs are 19-30 overall and 9-16 on the road so far this season.
Jeff Samardzija has been very unlucky, as he's already picked up six losses despite an overall ERA of 3.25. Will he get the better of the White Sox' Jose Quintana, who's 3-1 with a 3.48 ERA? Willie Bee has the call. The hosts have opened up as -115 favorites, so obviously oddsmakers are not of the belief this one's going to turn into a blowout. The Cubs are given a chance here, so a play on the underdog wouldn't be all that surprising.
Padres (Richard) vs. Mariners (Harang)
We've saved the best for last. Well....not really actually. The Mariners and Padres go head-to-head this afternoon and early this morning we can see Seattle listed as a -115 favorite for our MLB picks.
Jeff Grant is going to have his work cut out for him when it comes down to making his sports picks on this game. The Padres are 4-6 over their last 10, but the Mariners have been even worse at 2-8 in that same span.[gameodds]3/228091/43-349-192/us[/gameodds]
