Monday Odds Update

Let us help you decipher where the most glaring value may be for our MLB picks Monday evening.

Orioles (Chen) vs. Rays (Archer)

Covered by Ron Patrick

The Orioles are slipping further and further behind, and it's not like they get a walk in the park today either against Chris Archer.

Archer owns a 3.07 ERA over the second half of the season and has gone 5-3 with a 2.70 ERA in 11 home starts on the year. He shut down Baltimore, allowing only two hits and one run over seven innings in his one meeting against them.

Unfortunately for the Orioles, Wei-Yin Chen has struggled to find that same level of success. He's 3-4 with a 4.93 ERA since the All-Star break and is sporting a 4.50 ERA on the road.

Ron believes both pitchers will show up in the sole day game today and will therefore be recommending action on the UNDER 7.5 runs.

Astros (Lyles) vs. Rangers (Holland)

Covered by Willie Bee

It's not a secret: the Rangers desperately need to string together some wins to get back into a Wild Card spot, and they're hoping it all starts with tonight's opener against Houston.

Derek Holland will be pitching for Texas and he's been roughed up badly this month, going 0-3 with a 7.91 ERA in four September outings. He's also just 2-6 (with a 3.67 ERA) in 14 starts at home this season.

Thing is, Jordan Lyles has been even worse. The right-hander is 3-5 with a 6.98 ERA since the All-Star Break and was absolutely killed for 11 hits and eight runs in four innings versus this Texas team back in May.

This seems to be a good spot for Holland to right the ship and you have to think the Rangers will be able to get things going against Lyles. Willie agrees and is on Texas on the run-line at -130.

Pirates (Morton) vs. Cubs (Samardzija)

Covered by Joe Freda

Both Jeff Samardzija and Charlie Morton were brilliant in their recent starts.

Samardzija went into Milwaukee and held the Brewers to five hits and three runs in seven innings – he struck out eight and walked two in the no decision. On the year the hard-throwing righty is 3-5 with a 4.96 ERA at Wrigley.

Five days ago, Morton was outstanding (8.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 9 K) at home against the Padres and now will try to get it done on the road, where he's 5-2 with a 3.88 ERA in nine appearances. Morton's given up seven runs in 11 innings against the Cubs in 2013.

Despite Pittsburgh's high motivation, this appears to be good value on a solid pitcher in Samardzija at home. Joe is taking the Cubs, who have won three of their last four home encounters with the Pirates, to win at +115 in the MLB odds.

Royals (Ventura) vs. Mariners (Maurer)

Covered by Joe Freda

It's not over until it's over, a motto the Royals are holding dear to their hearts as they try to storm their way into a playoff berth. It's not looking too good, but crazier things have happened.

Kansas City will turn to Yordano Ventura, who will be making his second MLB start tonight. He was as advertised against Cleveland six days ago, so let's see how he fares out on the road for the first time in the big leagues.

For the Mariners, Brandon Maurer heads to the mound. He'll try to build off a solid start in which he allowed five hits and two runs over five innings in Detroit. The overall numbers speak for themselves though: Maurer is 4-8 with a 6.95 ERA and 1.66 WHIP this season.

Maurer's incompetence hasn't swayed Joe away from a recommendation on the UNDER (8) however.

Morning Odds

By: Steven Suarez

Let's see what kind of MLB betting lines oddsmakers have dished out to start off the new week.

Orioles (Chen) vs. Rays (Archer)

Covered by Ron Patrick

A four-game losing streak has essentially eliminated the Orioles from serious playoff contention. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay has won three in a row and is currently primed to make the postseason.

The importance of this afternoon's game is therefore pretty obvious. Chris Archer and the Rays are listed as -145 favorites at most online baseball betting shops.

Astros (Lyles) vs. Rangers (Holland)

Covered by Willie Bee

If the regular season ended today, the Rangers wouldn't be making the playoffs. They're one-and-a-half games behind the Wild Card spots right now, but the schedule is in their favor with seven consecutive home games to close out the season.

Derek Holland will try to lead Texas to a series-opening win tonight and the MLB odds have the home team as huge -270 chalk. Houston can be backed at +250.

Pirates (Morton) vs. Cubs (Samardzija)

Covered by Joe Freda

The Pirates and Reds have identical records, but the edge over the next few days has to go to Cincinnati, as they play host to the Mets for three games while Pittsburgh has to travel to Wrigley.

It'll be Jeff Samardzija and Charlie Morton to open up the series, with sportsbooks installing the visiting Pirates as -135 favorites.

Royals (Ventura) vs. Mariners (Maurer)

Covered by Joe Freda

Promising rookie Yordano Ventura was solid in his MLB debut, as he gave up five hits and one run over 5 and 2/3 innings in a no decision against Cleveland. He'll make his first road start tonight at Safeco Field.

Kansas City still has a lot to play for, and considering Seattle is nine games under .500 at home this season, we can't be flabbergasted by the price on the Royals here. They can be added to your MLB picks in the -130 to -140 range.
