With Derek Jeter coming back from the DL, the Yankees are making a late season run after a win over the Tampa Bay Rays and Yankee beater Alex Cobb. But is it enough to back them with our MLB picks tonight?
New York’s 3-2 victory over the Rays puts them just 3.5 games behind Oakland for the final wild card spot and 7 games behind Boston for the divisional lead with plenty of inter-divisional games remaining. New York also gets to play a team that they’ve owned as the Yankees have beaten the Blue Jays 10 consecutive games. Is this as easy a play as it looks?
He’s Still Got It
Alfonso Soriano has been a steal of a pickup for the Yanks. He has 9 HR and 29 RBI in just 111 at-bats with a modest .270 BA for N.Y.. Soriano showed that he still has speed as he stole 3rd base with 1 out in yesterday’s game against the Rays in which he was the eventual winning run. The Yankees will continue to need Soriano’s bat as this team is starting to get healthy and looking to make up the 3.5 game deficit. For his career, Soriano is 3 for 9 with 2 HR and 6 RBI against Blue Jays starter R.A. Dickey (9-12, 4.49). Might we see some fireworks tonight from the 37 year old veteran?
New York will also look for the leadership of superstar Robinson Cano. Cano has been pounding the baseball lately and is coming off of a 3 for 5 effort against the Rays with a homer and 2 runs batted in.
From a Blue Jays perspective, Edwin Encarnacion will need to be a presence as you don’t know what you’re going to get out of Dickey. Phil Hughes is certainly hittable and Encarnacion is a lifetime .344 batter with 1 HR and 3 RBI in 32 at-bats against Hughes.
Look for the Yankees to continue their dominance over the Jays in what should be a close game.

Oakland Athletics (72-57) at Detroit Tigers (77-53)
No disrespect to the Atlanta Braves, but the Tigers might be the best team in baseball. They’re coming off of a series at CitiField in which they dominated the New York Mets and made the Mets look like a minor league team.
Detroit isn’t even at full power with the PED scandal, an injury to Miguel Cabrera, and Prince Fielder having one of the worst season’s of his career. They continue to win and it just shows how good that they really are.
Everyone knows about Miguel Cabrera going for a 2nd consecutive Triple Crown, but the 1-2 combination of Austin Jackson and Torii Hunter is fairly intimidating in its own right.
This has been a poor season for Jackson, but he’s managed to come up big lately. He’s currently riding a 7 game hitting streak and in that period of time is 14 for 32 with 9 runs, 2 HR and 7 RBI. Torii Hunter on the other hand seems to be ageless. He has one of the best gloves in the majors and is hitting .303 with 14 HR and 66 RBI. These two players get on base often and set the tone for Cabrera and Fielder. This is the best 1-4 combination in baseball and along with great pitching, these are the reasons why they win.
When I think of Anibal Sanchez, I think of composure. Whether he has a poor outing or not, he doesn’t get too high or low mentally. This is a pitcher that the Tigers will be able to count on during playoff time and upcoming MLB odds should reflect that. In his last 7 starts, Sanchez has allowed just 8 runs in his last 47 2/3 innings. He also loves home cooking as he’s 7-2 with a 1.92 ERA this season at Comerica Field.
Oakland is more than a formidable baseball team, but Detroit is currently unstoppable and an easy play for Monday.
