We start the week on a solid run for our SBR followers with a record of 6-1.  Many of these have been underdog selections, as is our play today as you will note in the following analysis, where we use the better team with the better pitcher in the role of underdog on one of the weakest home fields in MLB.  Along with momentum and revenge, it makes for a solid play.

N.Y. Mets vs Arizona Diamondbacks
The NY Mets travel west to Arizona, after defeating the Padres in consecutive games this weekend.  Note the potential momentum build, as it is a rare opportunity in the last month for the Mets to record a winning streak of 3 games or more.  I have patiently waited for this game since last Thursday, when the D’Backs completed a 3-game sweep of the Mets in the Big Apple by combined scores of 17-5.  But that was a rare showing of success for an Arizona team that is on a combined slide of 14-30 of late, including their return to towel-tossing form this weekend, when they were swept in Boston by combined scores of 31-9.

N.Y Mets
The Mets are clearly hungry and approach this series not only with revenge, but also momentum from their weekend sweep and the knowledge they trail St. Louis by just 2 ½ games for the 2nd Wild Card spot.  If the New Yorkers are to make their move, it will be necessary for them to play with more intensity and conviction than they have in the last month, where they have gone 12-20.  There will be ample motivation from their starter tonight, Colon, as this is the only one of 30 MLB teams that Colon has NOT defeated.  This will be Colon’s 500th career game and the 2nd in 6 days against the D’Backs.  Last Wednesday, he allowed just 1 run in 7 solid innings, but took a no decision in the contest.  That outing extended his current form, which has seen him work 6+ IP in 4 starts, while allowing exactly one run in 3 of those 4 outings.  Though he has never defeated Arizona, he has a career 3.20 ERA against them.  After a brief dip in his fortunes in the month of July, Colon has righted the ship and has proven to be the Mets’ most reliable starter with a record of 10-6 and 3.35 ERA.  Not bad for an overweight, 43-year old starter in the August heat!

Diamondbacks
Arizona starter, Robbie Ray, is 5-11 with a 4.57 ERA.  To his credit, he pitched 7 scoreless innings, opposite Colon in their meeting last Wednesday.  Much like most of the Arizona pitchers, he has struggled from this mound with a 5.40 ERA.  In his previous outing at home, he allowed 6 runs in a loss to Washington.

Conclusion
At the beginning of August, I included Arizona as part of my Towel-Tossers.  Since that time, all 7 of their losses have come by 2 or more runs.  Such was the case this weekend, when they were blown out by the Red Sox, 3 times by a combined score of 31-9, including 16-2 on Sunday.  Playing at home is no bargain for Arizona, as their record of 19-39 surpasses only Atlanta (by ½ game for the worst home record in MLB).  Follow the BUY sign on the Mets’ momentum, their revenge motive and the underdog price in playing this super-surger vs. towel-tosser as the MLB Dog of the Day.  I invite you to put the MLB odds in your favor and join me in my MLB pick on the NY Mets tonight.
