The Los Angeles outscored Seattle, 19-1, in a pair of duels last month. Angels left-hander Jason Vargas (5-4, 3.74 ERA) is slated to face Mariners righty Aaron Harang (3-6, 5.60 ERA).
Angels, Trout light up M’s
Angels outfielder Mike Trout hit 6-for-9 in May’s two matchups against Seattle, including four extra-base hits en route to five RBIs. Los Angeles edged the Mariners in hits, 27-13, cashing in both battles as sizeable ‘chalk.’
Seattle and Los Angeles both went 2-1 over the weekend, with each logging a defeat in Sunday’s action to fall short of sweeps. The Mariners were lit up in a 10-2 defeat against the Oakland A’s, while the Angels fell a run short from rallying in a 6-5 setback with the New York Yankees.
Vargas outdueled in Baltimore
Vargas picked up his first loss in eight starts with Tuesday’s 3-2 defeat for Los Angeles to the Baltimore Orioles, failing to collect as a 104 MLB odds road dog. The 30-year-old allowed all three of Baltimore’s runs, giving up seven hits over 6 2/3 innings.
Angels first baseman drove in one of his side’s runs, uniting with mate Howie Kendrick to hit 3-for-6. Los Angeles’ Mark Trumbo went 0-for-4 from the cleanup spot, striking out three times.
Harang shuts out Astros
Harang notched his second win in four outings on the same night’s card, tossing nine shutout frames in Seattle’s 4-0 victory over the Houston Astros. The 12th-year veteran held Houston to two hits, cashing as a 155 home favorite.
Mariners outfielders Raul Ibanez and Endy Chavez both logged 2-for-4 nights, drilling a homer and a pair of doubles, respectively. Seattle finished with seven hits, while mates Kyle Seager and Michael Saunders drove in one run each.
Back the OVER in Anaheim
Vargas opened as 175 home ‘chalk’ at William Hill, while the ‘total’ was first posted at a flat eight. Anaheim’s weather forecast calls for a clear 69 degrees, with calm winds.
I am backing the OVER in this duel for my sports picks, looking for both clubs to open up with some runs in this series.
Harang comes off a solid outing, but struggled in his two starts against the Angels this year. The veteran righty gave up 12 runs over a combined 6 2/3 frames, with four homers surrendered as part of 15 hits.
Vargas has given foes their share of chances at home, allowing a 1.28 WHIP and .310 OBP in seven dates at Angel Stadium. The California native also faces a few bats that have had success against his arm, with Seattle’s Kendrys Morales and Michael Morse poking three homers over a 7-for-20 career mark. Morse also comes in hot after a 6-for-10 weekend in Oakland, notching a trio of doubles.
The OVER is 12-5 in Seattle’s last 17 road games against clubs with losing records, while going 6-2 in Harang’s last eight outings as an underdog. Look for the OVER to collect again here for your MLB picks, adding to its 6-2-1 mark in the last nine meetings between these rivals at “The Big A.”
