Find out why our handicappers are adding the 'Under' to our MLB picks in tonight's matchup between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the St Louis Cardinals.

The Pittsburgh Pirates notched a 9-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in Monday’s opener between the rivals, cashing as 148 home favorites. Tuesday afternoon’s MLB betting action sees the first end of a double dip between the foes, with Pittsburgh’s A.J. Burnett (4-7, 2.96 ERA) opposing St. Louis’ Lance Lynn (12-5, 3.98 ERA).

Check out our Tuesday Morning MLB Odds & Betting Lines Report.

Pirates, Alvarez crush Cards

Pirates slugger Pedro Alvarez drilled his 27th homer in Monday’s triumph, while mate Clint Barnes poked a pair of doubles. The duo united to log five RBIs, with Pittsburgh edging the Cardinals in hits, 9-7.

St. Louis’ Matt Carpenter and Shane Robinson drove in one run each, combining to bat 2-for-7. Cardinals first baseman Allen Craig was held to an 0-for-4 night from the cleanup spot, leaving three men on base.

Burnett goes seven on the road

Burnett came away with a no-decision in Thursday’s 9-7 defeat for Pittsburgh as a 121 road dog against the Washington Nationals. The 36-year-old allowed one earned run over seven innings, giving up nine hits.

Pittsburgh’s Josh Harrison notched four RBIs in a 3-for-5 outing, scoring mates Jordy Mercer and Russell Martin in the ninth frame to tie the battle, 7-7. Pirates reliever Bryan Morris logged his staff’s loss in the inning’s bottom half, surrendering a walkoff homer to Washington’s Bryce Harper.

Lynn ends slide at home

Lynn notched his first win in three starts on the same night, with St. Louis’ 3-1 victory as 180 home ‘chalk’ over the Philadelphia Phillies. The Indiana native gave up Philadelphia’s sole run, allowing five hits through seven frames of action.

Cardinals outfielder Jon Jay drilled a triple as part of a 1-for-4 night, scoring Matt Carpenter for an early 2-0 lead. St. Louis’ Trevor Rosenthal and Edward Mujica logged a hold and save respectively, tossing one inning each of the duel’s final two frames.

Back the UNDER in Pittsburgh

MLB odds makers were slow to post numbers for this contest, given the shift in pitchers for the doubleheader scenario. The weather forecast in Pittsburgh calls for a 77 degree afternoon, with calm winds.

I am adding the UNDER to my sports picks in this duel, looking for both starters to hold serve in a close contest.

Burnett has held foes to a 1.11 WHIP and .279 OBP over his nine home starts, with the UNDER cashing at a 7-2 clip. The latest three affairs of that stretch saw the veteran hold lineups to six earned runs over 18 2/3 IP, surrendering just one homer.

Lynn has tossed some loose affairs in recent road dates, but should settle down here with a lot on the line in this series. The 26-year-old has seen the UNDER collect at a 6-1 mark over his last seven outings, while holding Pittsburgh to one run on two hits as part of April’s seven-inning stint against Alvarez and Co.

The UNDER is 4-1 in St. Louis’ last five road dates against right-handed starters, while the wager has cashed at 6-0 in Pittsburgh’s last six spots that followed scoring five or more runs. Umpire Eric Cooper is slated behind home plate, with the UNDER collecting at an 8-2-1 clip in the Iowa native’s last 11 called games.

Look for these UNDER trends to hold up here, with both sides’ staffs looking to start the doubleheader in a stingy fashion.
