The Texas Rangers travel to Anaheim to face the LA Angels in the 1st of this 4-game weekend set.  The first pitch is scheduled for 10:05 ET. Which team should we back with our MLB picks?

Texas Rangers (Holland) vs. LA Angels (Santiago) (-115) 10:05 ET
The AL West figures to be a highly competitive division with Texas, Seattle the LA Angels and even Oakland being capable of chasing down Houston for the divisional crown.

Head-to-head matchups, such as this series, will go a long way to determining the eventual victor.  That is why it is so important to set the tone early in a series, such as this, in early April.

Texas Rangers
Texas enters this 4-game weekend set, following a 1-2 start vs. Seattle, in which they lost the last 2 games.  The Angels opened their season with a pair of losses at the hands of the Cubs, before having a day off to prepare for this AL West division rivalry with the Rangers.

The Rangers opened their season with a 3-2 victory against Seattle, as they scratched out 3 runs to come from behind for the win.  The previous 2 games, however, have been disasters, as they lost by a combined score of 19-7 to Seattle.  A major culprit in those losses was a bullpen that allowed 14 runs by relievers.  Tonight’s starter, Holland, has faced this Angels team more than any other opponent.  In 20 starts against LAA, Holland is 8-6, but has a whopping 5.46 ERA.  Facing this hungry lineup of the Angels could well produce more disastrous results for Holland.

Los Angeles Angels
The Angels had the misfortune of hooking up with the Chicago Cubs for the first 2 games of the season.  After not having won a World Series since 1908, the Cubs are predicted to get there this season!  Behind their staff aces, Arrieta and Lester, they prove the reason why.  Combined with timely and powerful hitting, the 2 games against the Angels were no contest.  The Cubs won the 2 games by a combined score of 15-1, including 6-1 on Tuesday in a matchup of Lester vs. the Angels’ prized-young starter, Heaney.

Not only did the Angels lose that contest, but they were also forced to place their No. 2 starter on the 15-day DL with flexor muscle strain in his left (throwing) arm.  After an off day, the Angels are looking to rebound on a field, where they were a solid 49-32 last season and were a combined 101-61 the previous 2 years.  Tonight’s starter, Santiago, pitched his best baseball in the first half of last season, posting a 2.33 ERA and receiving an All Star nomination.  In his last 15 starts, however, Santiago’s performance was like night and day.  The 2nd half of the season, he had a 5.47 ERA.  I look for him to return more to his early season form of last year, being buoyed by a strong history vs. the Rangers.  In 72 1/3 IP of work vs. Texas, Santiago is 6-2 with a 3.36 ERA.

After being embarrassed on their home field by the Cubs, I look for a bounce back here by the Angels, who have had a day off to clear their mind and regroup.  I invite you to put the MLB odds in your favor and join me in my MLB pick on the LA Angels tonight.
