Today we have a very big series starting in Baltimore when the Boston Red Sox come to visit the Orioles. MLB Odds have set the total for this game pretty high, read our handicapper's expert opinion.

Boston Red Sox vs Baltimore Orioles
MLB odds have set the money line for this game close to a pick at most places. Both of these teams can flat out hit but Boston is a bit better and they have a "better than decent" pitcher on the mound so not having the pay any juice I believe is good value.

Boston Red Sox
Eduardo Rodriguez takes the mound for Boston with a 5.43 ERA and 1.45 whip but has allowed just 11 earned runs in his last six starts. The young left-hander made some adjustments after getting shelled at Tampa Bay back in late June and he is been very solid since keeping both his earned runs and hit totals down. As well, in his last stretch of six games he has only allowed four total earned runs with no more than one per game in any contest. He will have his hands full today against one of the best offenses in the American League in Baltimore and he did not pitch that well against them his last opportunity back in mid-June allowing five earned runs in just four innings.

However, it looks like he is a much different pitcher now than he was then so he should come in with some confidence. Being a left-hander as well should help him today, more on that below. At the plate, Boston remains statistically the best team in baseball ranking first across the board in most major categories. After struggling a little bit last week they have come back to win four games in a row and although they only scored three runs yesterday  against Cleveland they been swinging the bats very well in this current win streak.

Baltimore Orioles
Yovani Gallardo gets the start for Baltimore and comes in with a 5.17 ERA and 1.60 whip but is coming off a solid one earned run performance in Oakland. The nine-year veteran has put together a couple solid starts in a row but he still can struggle at times and doesn't go really deep into ballgames. He has only faced the Red Sox once this year allowing five earned runs in five innings but prior to this season, he has actually pitched pretty well against Boston.

On closer look, he has thrown three quality starts in his last four chances on the mound but I believe things will be a little bit different today facing the best hitting team in baseball. Basically, although he has been decent he simply is not a guy who's going to hold down the Red Sox which again I believe puts value on backing Boston at a decent number. Offensively there is a lot to like with this Baltimore team and after struggling last week they're coming back from taking two of three in San Francisco including a nice come back the other day. However, they do tend to struggle against left-handers despite the fact they hit Rodriguez decently their last opportunity. Surprisingly, the Orioles rank last in the American League in both batting average at .234 and OPS at .690 facing southpaws.
