Let’s see if we can get off to a hot start as certain teams need to win and outcomes become more predictable. It’s MLB picks of the Day.
Moment of Silence
34 years ago, this day, Yankees Captain, Thurman Munson, was killed in an airplane crash. Why am I saying this? Because we’re bettors and this can possibly have an impact on today’s games.
Playing With Heavy Hearts?
The fact that this game takes places nearly 3000 miles away from Yankee Stadium might take a little luster off of the game, but every year on this date, there’s always a mention of Thurman Munson and players with a sense of history such as Derek Jeter, remember this day. August 2nd could have a slight effect on the Yankees, who need to keep pace with the leaders of the American League East.
Thriller in L.A.
New York is coming off of thrilling 3-0 victory over the Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw. This could be a season changing game for the Yanks, who are 8.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox.
Kershaw wanted to stay in, but manager, Don Mattingly, thought otherwise, and it cost the 1st place Dodgers dearly. New York should have a much easier time as they face an inferior San Diego Padres team, who sits 9 games behind the Dodgers.
Sabathia vs. Cashner
C.C. Sabathia is having by far his worst season as a Yankee. C.C. is supposed to be the “anchor” of the pitching staff, but instead, he’s pitching like he’s “dead in the water”.
This will be a major test for Sabathia who has allowed 14 runs and 18 hits in his last 10 innings. Opposing teams have been ripping him apart lately.
On the positive side for the hefty Sabathia, he’s a career 3-0 with a 2.12 ERA in 4 starts against the Padres. C.C. must have a big game here.
Sabathia will be opposed by Andrew Cashner (7-5, 3.88). If you’re a Padres fan, this is one of the guys that you want to take the ball. He can give the Padres 6 solid innings, allowing around 3 runs per start.
I’m looking for veterans like Jeter and Soriano to step up here on this historic day. Soriano started off slow with the Yanks but has since, picked up the pace and fit in very well with this team.
Chicago White Sox (40-66) at Detroit Tigers (61-45)
Fallen Off The Map!
Adam Dunn might be hitting above .200 but the Chicago White Sox are an outright disaster, having lost 7 straight games. A bettor would have to be really foolish to take the Sox any time soon. They have given you every reason to fade them at all cost.
I never hit the trends this early but it’s warranted here.
White Sox are 8-20 as an MLB odds underdog of +201 or greater (this tells you that they’ve been a large dog often aside from losing)
White Sox are 16-42 in their last 58 games
White Sox are 20-44 in their last 64 road games
White Sox are 5-16 vs. a team, with a home winning % of .600 or greater
Tigers are 7-0 in their last 7 games vs. a left-handed pitcher
Tigers are 5-0 in their last 5 games overall
Tigers are 30-12 during game 1 of a home series
Tigers are 22-8 in Fister’s last 30 home starts
This is plenty of evidence in addition to what we already know about the Tigers and White Sox; Detroit is a very good team and Chicago is awful.
A major reason why the White Sox have collapsed has been the loss of production from Paul Konerko. The Sox are used to 30 HR, 100 RBI, and .300 BA from Konerko, who’s not playing. When Konerko played this season, he’s been terrible.
The Tigers will be ready, coming off of an 11-1 victory over Washington. In this game, Torii Hunter went 4 for 5 with a home run and 3 RBI. The Tigers offense should be really sharp tonight and with Doug Fister (9-5 ,3.67) at the mound, will have a decisive advantage in this game.
Free Pick - Detroit -1.5 -115 at Bet 365
