We are examining five games closely this evening, including a great matchup between Jon Lester and the Red Sox and Max Scherzer and the Tigers at Fenway. Here's our MLB betting odds and pitching report for Friday.

Miami Marlins (Alvarez) vs. San Francisco Giants (Petit)
Covered by Willie Bee
The Giants just continue to win and they've now built up a four-game lead atop the NL West. They're 13-6 at home this season heading into tonight's battle with the Marlins.

Miami will have Henderson Alvarez on the mound and he's gone 2-3 with a 3.33 ERA. Not too shabby, especially when you consider the Giants turn to Yusmeiro Petit, who's 2-1 with a 4.85 ERA and was just beat up badly in his latest start.

In spite of Petit's struggles, San Francisco is simply the better all-around team and will be at home, so Willie's taking on a little chalk with his MLB picks.

Pick: Giants -130

Pittsburgh Pirates (Volquez) vs. New York Yankees (Phelps)
Covered by Willie Bee
A new series begins tonight, with the Yankees and Pirates going head-to-head in the Bronx.

David Phelps has yet to grab a winning decision this season, going 0-0 with a 4.09 ERA. Pittsburgh hasn't been getting much better out of Edinson Volquez. He's struggled to the tune of a 1-3 record with a 4.36 ERA and he couldn't even get through the fifth inning in his most recent outing.

Despite all this, Willie believes we should look towards a total play and take the UNDER as one of our sports picks.

Pick: UNDER 8.5

Detroit Tigers (Scherzer) vs. Boston Red Sox (Lester)
Covered by Jeff Grant & Ron Patrick
While the Red Sox hover near .500, the Tigers are on a roll, having won three in a row to build up a six-game lead on Kansas City in the AL Central. Detroit is 13-8 on the road and will try to improve that mark behind the arm of Max Scherzer.

Scherzer is in the midst of an outstanding season. He's 5-1 with a 2.04 ERA thus far, but it's not going to be easy at Fenway against a good Boston offense.

The Red Sox counter with Jon Lester, who's been excellent himself. Though he's an even 4-4 on the season, he's recorded a 2.75 ERA. We've got two varying picks for this game, with Jeff recommending the OVER and Ron thinking Boston is the better play on the money-line.

Pick: Jeff: OVER 7.5 // Ron: Red Sox -102

New York Mets (Niese) vs. Washington Nationals (Roark)
Covered by Jeff Grant
These aren't the most flashiest of pitchers, but both Tanner Roark (2-1, 3.65 ERA) and Jonathon Niese (2-2, 2.17 ERA) have been solid for their teams this season.

This is the first meeting between these teams since the opening series of the season. The Nationals swept the Mets on the road and will be hopeful to inflict similar damage back in their own ballpark this time around.

Though Roark and Niese have been effective, Jeff thinks the value is on the OVER and is foreseeing at least seven runs between the two offenses.

Pick: OVER 7

Los Angeles Dodgers (Greinke) vs. Arizona Diamondbacks (Miley)
Covered by Jeff Grant
Neither team is really playing that well. The Diamondbacks are still last in the division and are an even 5-5 over their previous 10.

As for the Dodgers, they're at 4-6 in that same span and now find themselves five games back of San Francisco in the NL West. Wade Miley (3-3, 4.82 ERA) has had his fair share of struggles this season, so let's see if he can rise to the occasion against Los Angeles.

It's been an excellent year for Zack Greinke, who takes the bump for the Dodgers. Jeff is backing the better pitcher (and better team for that matter) by taking the road team as clear-cut favorites in the MLB odds.

Pick: Dodgers -145
