As the NBA season starts to wind down, Major League Baseball will soon start to take center stage. It’s the first weekend in May and at this point, we’re getting a feeling of how the season will “go down”. For Friday we have two MLB Picks on offer, as we try to hunt down the best value for Friday.
New York Mets (11-15) at Atlanta Braves (17-11)
These two teams have a long heated rivalry, but luckily for the Mets, Chipper Jones has retired. However, New York will still have to worry about Atlanta starter, Mike Minor (3-2, 3.13) and superstar Justin Upton.
The Mets start righty, Shaun Marcum and he’s had major problems in the two games that he’s pitched this season (1 in relief). Marcum is coming off of a poor outing against the lowly Miami Marlins in which he gave up 2 runs and 4 hits in just 1 2/3 innings. Marcum really hasn’t been a starter this season and look for New York to give him as many innings as his performance level expresses. Another word, if there’s any sign of trouble, look for manager Terry Collins to switch pitchers.
The Braves start left hander, Mike Minor. Minor has pitched well this season, but is coming off of a poor performance in his last outing. He gave up 6 runs and 6 hits in 6 2/3 innings to the heavy hitting Detroit Tigers. Minor is a career 3-1 against the Mets, but it was due to run support. He has a career ERA of 6.03 against New York. Atlanta gets the edge in pitching but they can’t feel too confident about Minor’s last outing.
Atlanta is coming off of a 3-1 loss in which Dan Haren mowed down the offense quite easily. The Braves are also looking for Justin Upton to get back into the groove. He has an amazing 12 home runs on the season, but has only hit 1 homer in his last 8 games and has been slumping overall offensively.
The Wright Stuff
David Wright got his big contract and expect him to have a big season. That said, he’s not a huge power hitter in regards to his superstar labeling.
The Mets are coming off of a huge comeback win over Miami, 7-6 in which Wright was the catalyst, going 3 for 5 with a home run. Expect the momentum to carry over to this game.
Minor isn’t Felix Hernandez and the Mets are coming off of a major high. Look for them to pull off the upset.

Los Angeles Dodgers (13-14) at San Francisco Giants (16-12)
I’ve come to the realization that no matter who is in their lineup, the Giants are always going to be a good team due to their pitching staff. The Dodgers on the other hand aren’t repeating their hot start of last season and can’t compete with the Giants pitching except for one man, Clayton Kershaw (3-2, 1.73). Kershaw takes the mound as he faces Barry Zito (3-1, 3.29) in what should be a low scoring pitcher’s duel.
A Very Low Total
MLB odds have the total listed under 7 runs, I consider that a very low total and a strong pitching matchup. At 5 Dimes Sportsbook, you can buy runs and because of Zito, I’m going to buy half of a run at UNDER 7 -142.
These teams don’t have the offense of a team like the Detroit Tigers team in which a pitcher fears the first 5 hitters in the lineup.
Superstar, Matt Kemp is also in a major slump and hasn’t been the same since his hamstring injury last season. These are two light hitting teams and starting pitching will be in control of this game.
