The weather is starting to get warmer as we approach the mid-part of May and in some areas, the ball will carry a bit farther. Will this be a factor in tonight’s slate of games as we make our baseball picks?
Cleveland Indians (18-14) at Detroit Tigers (19-13)
We’re definitely playing with house money and now is a good time to take a risk as the Cleveland Indians (who have won 10 out of their last 11 games) are an enormous betting underdog to Max Scherzer (4-0, 3.43) and the hard hitting Detroit Tigers.
This is a risk, but people better start realizing that the Indians are for real! Manager, Terry Francona, is re-creating what he did in Boston and this time he’s incorporating players like Mark Reynolds, Michael Brantley, Jason Kipnis, and Nick Swisher. What’s so good about the Tribe is that they don’t believe in the hype; they have no ego.
The Winning Continues
Cleveland is coming off of a 9-2 victory over a respectable Oakland Athletics team. In this game, Jason Kipnis and Mark Reynolds hit home runs. Reynolds either hits homers or strikes out, but he’s a very clutch player that rises to the occasion and you’re going to get your money’s worth when backing the Tribe and the bat of Reynolds. On the season, Reynolds is hitting .291 with 11 HR and 29 RBI.
Mark Reynolds is hitless in 5 at-bats against Max Scherzer for his career, but this veteran is a game changer and capable of just about anything.
Starting pitcher, Max Scherzer is a huge reason why the Tigers are such a heavy favorite. He’s a big-time strikeout pitcher that’s coming off of a 17-2 pounding of the Houston Astros. Scherzer went 8 innings and gave up just 1 run in his last outing. With the offense that Detroit possesses, if Max Scherzer is pitching well, they’re a tough team to beat.
Modern Day Murderers Row
When you look up and down the Detroit lineup and see the names Jackson, Hunter, Fielder, and Cabrera, nothing else needs to be said. This is one of the best offenses in baseball and Cleveland starter, Corey Kluber, could have his hands full.
These teams are evenly matched. Cleveland is carrying a great deal of momentum .Confidence is everything. This team is underestimated. Look for the Tribe to pull off the upset

New York Yankees (20-13) at Kansas City Royals (18-13)
Another team that has exceeded expectations is the New York Yankees. I mean how many injuries can a team suffer and still keep winning?
The Yanks will be happy to see Phil Hughes (1-2, 3.60) taking the mound. Hughes was very impressive in his last outing in which he pitched 8 innings of scoreless ball with 9 strikeouts. Hughes has been an overall winner in the majors, but this is a guy that shows flashes of being an ace at times.
With the Yankees coming off a rain soaked 3-1 victory over Colorado, Phil Hughes starting, and Robinson Cano starting to show some power, the Yankees look mighty appealing as a +101 betting underdog against K.C.
The New Kansas City
You had to feel good about this team coming out of spring training and the Royals have pretty much carried their success over to the regular season.
The Royals are just .5 game behind the Tigers in the American League Central Division and this appears to be a division that will be dogfight up until October.
Kansas City is coming off of a 6-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in which Alex Gordon and Mike Moustakous both went deep to ensure the victory.
Alex Gordon has been a beast of late, hitting home runs in 3 consecutive games. On the season, Gordon is hitting .316 with 6 HR and 25 RBI. Gordon has a modest 5 game hitting streak and is 7 for his last 17. Can Gordon hit a home run in a 4th consecutive game? He’s a career 4 for 13 with 1 RBI off of Hughes, but anything is possible.
The Yankees haven’t been scoring tons of runs, but they find ways to win. I really like what I saw from Phil Hughes in his last outing. Take the Yankees at these appealing MLB betting odds.
