MLB Picks: Finding Value in Today's Pitching Matchups

John Ryan

Wednesday, May 14, 2014 1:57 PM GMT

I had a losing day of 0.55 units/unit wagered Tuesday with Phillies falling 4-3 to the Angels while the Astros played very well shutting out the Rangers. Today I look to get back on the streak wagon with two MLB picks for the Rockies vs. Royals and Rangers vs. Astros.

Ryan is 11-6 +4.35 Units with his 5* MLB Titans
For the season, the record now stands at 11-6 with 4.35 units/unit wagered in total profits. For example, if you are wagering $20 per * unit play ($100 per 5* unit release) then you would have pocketed $435 dollars with these 17 MLB 5* Titan releases.

Plays for the Wednesday Card
I am going to step out the Mid-West and play on the Colorado Rockies when they face the Kansas City Royals set to start at 2:10 PM ET. This is the second game of a two-game set where KC won the first game 5-1 installed as -145 favorites Tuesday. Colorado managed just 5 hits with 3B Nolan Arenado collecting two of those hits. I certainly am looking for a lot more offensive production from the Rockies this afternoon.

Rockies vs. Royals
Colorado leads the Majors with a 0.313 batting average (115-for-367) with runners in scoring position. They are also the only team hitting above 0.300 with runners in scoring position and also lead the league in average at 0.302, doubles with 98, home runs with 57, RBI with 222, runs with 230, on-base-percentage at 0.350, and slugging percentage at 0.505.

The Rockies success doesn't stop with the offense either. The Rockies have been able to win 23 games, third most in the NL and tied for third most in the Majors. The starting pitchers have won 17 of these games going 17-10 with a solid 4.15 ERA spanning 229 innings of work. Over the last week of action, the Rockies have the fourth-lowest ERA in the Majors at 2.55 spanning 60 innings of work. The bullpen ranks best in the Majors over the same span allowing just 2 ER for 1 1.06 ERA spanning 17 innings of work.

In the field they are an elite group as well. The Rockies have turned a Majors-best 46 double plays and this follows a second-best 2013 campaign where they turned 162 double plays. The Rockies are not a team in a major media outlet and are flying under the radar so, keep your eye on them for many more money making MLB picks

Rangers vs. Astros
I also like the Houston Astros when they host the Texas Rangers in a game set to start at 8:05 PM ET. As mentioned, I got the win with the Astros in shutout fashion Tuesday and I expect another solid performance from them tonight. Here is a very nice supporting system that has gone 137-50 for 73.3% winners and has made 58 units/unit wagered since 2008. Play against road teams (Texas) that are below average hitting teams batting

Houston starter Scott Feldman is off to a very strong start to the 2014 campaign. In five starts, he has posted a 1.93 ERA with a 0.918 WHIP spanning 32 2/3 innings of work. He is not a power starter, but has excellent location, especially with his fast ball. I fully expect him to go 6+ innings of work tonight leading the Astros to win and series win over the Rangers.

The Astros starting pitchers have gone 6.0+ innings in each of the last eight games, which is the longest stretch by the team this season. The last time this happened was from June 9-19, 2013, which was a 10-game stretch.
