The Cardinals invade the Windy City where they will battle the Cubs in the opener of a four-game set. Let's peruse the MLB odds and get on the right side of this NL Central matchup.

St. Louis Cardinals vs CH Cubs
The Nationals defeated the Indians 7-4 yesterday afternoon and that made writing this column a whole lot easier this morning. As many of you know by now, my MLB picks that were covering at a 70 percent clip until about the third week in July, have been going down faster than the Kardashians at a Kanye concert.

But as of this morning, I am starting a brand new winning streak and our record reflects +22.29 units which are predicated on all one unit bets. Despite my recent travails we are still hitting at over 62 percent with an eye towards burying our sportsbooks over the next six weeks. Without further ado, let's review the MLB odds in this NL Central tilt and make it two straight!

Cardinals Looking to Close the Gap
St. Louis has the dubious distinction of occupying a residence in the same division as one of the premier clubs in baseball, the Chicago Cubs. Thus, they are in second place but trail the division leading Cubs by 12 games with their best chance of closing that expansive gap coming in the form of this four-game set with their divisional rivals. Yet, a wild card berth is most certainly in the offing as the Cardinals and Marlins would need a tie-breaker to determine which team would play the Dodgers in a one-game playoff if the season ended today.

The Cardinals took two of three from the Reds including last night's 3-2 victory. Matt Carpenter and Jhonny Peralta each homered to lead St. Louis to the narrow victory. But tonight the opponent will be far more difficult as the venue shifts to Wrigley Field. St. Louis will send Carlos Martinez (10-7, 3.29, 1.20) to the hill who will try to redeem himself after a disastrous outing against the Braves in which he surrendered seven runs over five innings of work which resulted in a 13-5 loss. Martinez is 3-1 when starting against the Cubs over his career with an ERA of 5.40 and a WHIP of 1.530. Despite that bloated ERA his team's record is 5-1 (+4.3 units) in these starts.

Betting Analysis
Though the Cardinals' Carlos Martinez was rocked in his last outing, he is nevertheless having an impressive season. However, the Cubs are sending their southpaw superstar Jon Lester to toe the slab tonight and he has been outstanding this season. Lester limited the Athletics to two runs in his last appearance through seven full innings of work in a 7-2 Cubs' victory. In his previous start, he was dominating yet again when he blanked the Mariners over six innings in a 12-1 win.

Of course, there is also revenge on the minds of the Cubs who were swept in a three-game series at home by the Cardinals in June. Overall, St. Louis has a 5-4 edge over the Cubbies in the games played between the clubs this season. But let's not forget that the Cardinals starter was torched by the Cubs for six runs over five innings in a 9-8 loss the last time he faced Chicago. Jon Lester, on the other hand, has a career ERA of 2.20 and a WHIP of 0.99 versus the Cards. He also boasts a 1.99 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP at Wrigley this season.

In short, we have the better team, with revenge on their minds, sending one of the best lefties in baseball to the mound in front of their home crowd. Lay it and like it.
