We’ve asked our resident MLB handicapper for his two top totals picks on Friday’s card. Take the time to read this convincing betting preview article covering totals.

Orioles (Wilson) vs. Rays (Smyly) 7:10 PM ET
Tyler Wilson has certainly made the most of his opportunities since being called up from AAA baseball. He’s made three starts and three relief appearances, posting a stellar 2.63 ERA in addition to a 1.02 WHIP. Baltimore will be facing a southpaw starting pitcher (Smyly) today. They’ve gone 25-14 (64.1%) under the total this season versus a left-handed starting pitcher.

Drew Smyly has displayed very good form during his previous three starts. During that stretch he had a 2.00 ERA and a 6:1 strikeout to walk ratio. Since 5/13/2014, Smyly is 4-0 in his career team starts against Baltimore with an excellent 1.04 ERA and 0.81 WHIP. Tampa Bay will be facing a Baltimore team which is averaging a robust 1.34 home runs per game this season. The Rays are 28-12 (70%) under the total in 2015 when facing an opponent that averages 1.25 or more home runs per game.

If you haven’t guessed already after reading the last two paragraphs, I’m predicting runs being hard to come by in this game. According to current MLB odds, Heritage provides me with the best betting option regarding this wager.

Yankees (Tanaka) vs. Mets (Matz) 7:10 PM ET
Masahiro Tanaka has been dominant in his last two starts, allowing only 1 earned run on 10 hits while string out 17 in 15.0 innings. Tanaka has made one career starts versus the Mets, and that came last season when he tossed a 4 hit complete game shutout. The Yankees enter this weekend series with a poor .223 team batting average over their previous seven games.

Steven Matz will be making his fifth career MLB start today. The much heralded young hurler has posted a sparkling 1.87 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in his first four MLB starting appearances. The Mets bats have cooled considerably during their previous three games. During that stretch, they’ve average just 2.3 runs and 5.7 hits per game.

I like this game to be low scoring, and take on the look of an old fashioned pitcher’s duel. One of my MLB picks today will be indicative of that prediction.
