The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers had rain postpone Tuesday’s duel, setting up a day-night doubleheader for Wednesday’s MLB action. A juggle of the pitching matchups now has the Yankees sending right-handers Hiroki Kuroda and Phil Hughes against Dodgers southpaws Hyun-Jin Ryu and Chris Capuano.
Check out our Wednesday Morning MLB Odds & Betting Lines Report.
Game 1 - Kuroda (6-5, 2.78 ERA) vs Ryu (6-2, 2.85 ERA)
Kuroda has gone five starts without a win, logging a no-decision in Thursday’s lengthy outing as a 100 road dog against the Oakland Athletics. The 38-year-old gave up a pair of runs over eight innings, while New York dropped the duel 10 frames later, 3-2.
Ryu also notched a no-decision in his latest start for Los Angeles, giving up 11 hits in Wednesday’s 8-6 defeat to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The South Korea native allowed three runs over six frames, failing to collect as a minus 102 home choice.
I am backing the UNDER with my MLB picks in this opener, looking for both sides to stretch their staffs for a tight affair.
Kuroda has been sharp in home outings, holding foes to six earned runs over his last five starts. The UNDER cashed at 3-1-1 in that stretch, while the veteran has also given up no homers in 28 1/3 IP of daytime action this year.
Ryu logged a stellar start in his latest duel with an American League club, holding the Los Angeles Angels to two hits in a complete-game shutout, three weeks ago.The southpaw has also held his own in road affairs, including a New York appearance against the Mets – allowing one run over seven frames.
The UNDER has cashed at 7-2 in the Dodgers’ last nine doubleheader openers, while going 4-0 in Kuroda’s last four interleague matchups. Look for the UNDER to get the money again in this spot.
MLB Pick: UNDER
Game 2 - Hughes (3-5, 4.89 ERA) vs Capuano (1-4, 5.45 ERA)
Capuano makes his return to the Dodgers’ rotation after missing three weeks of action with a tricep injury. The Massachusetts native has logged a loss and no-decision in his two road starts, allowing four earned runs over 13 IP against the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Angels.
Hughes picked up a second loss in three starts with Wednesday’s 5-2 defeat for New York as a 104 road dog against the Oakland Athletics. The 26-year-old allowed three runs in 4 1/3 innings, giving up a long ball to Oakland’s Brandon Moss as part of four hits.
I am adding the OVER to Wednesday’s sports picks in this nightcap, looking for the scoring to light up compared to the afternoon’s tilt.
Capuano has had a subpar season out of the gate, giving up a sizable 1.52 WHIP and .336 OBP. The 11th-year hurler has given up six homers over his last five starts (28 1/3 IP), while umpire Rob Drake has seen the OVER cash at 24-8 in his last 32 interleague games behind the plate.
Hughes has surrendered seven long balls in six home outings (29 IP), while allowing 12 runs over the span’s latest two affairs (5 IP). The OVER is 18-7-1 in the California native’s last 26 starts at Yankee Stadium against clubs with losing records.
Dodgers second baseman Nick Punto has a double in his three at-bat’s facing Hughes, while New York’s Ichiro Suzuki finished last week’s road trip hitting 7-for-16 in the team’s last five games. Look for both lineups to have their share of chances in this matchup, giving MLB handicappers riding the OVER a pretty pay day.
MLB Pick: OVER
