Saturday night’s rematch has Padres right-hander Jason Marquis (8-2, 3.59 ERA) moving up a day to face Diamondbacks lefty Wade Miley (4-5, 4.89 ERA).
Padres, Forsythe out-duel D-Backs
Padres second baseman Logan Forsythe drove in his side’s pair of runs in Friday’s sixth inning, erasing Arizona’s early 1-0 lead. San Diego edged out Arizona in hits, 5-2, while each squad logged one error.
Arizona’s Cody Ross notched an RBI from the cleanup spot, scoring leadoff man Gerardo Parra in the matchup’s first frame. Diamondbacks relievers Will Harris and Brad Ziegler held San Diego scoreless over the final 2 1/3 innings, with the battle’s three combined runs dipping UNDER the MLB odds total of seven.
Marquis stays stingy at home
Marquis notched his seventh win in nine starts with Monday’s 7-6 triumph for San Diego as a 123 home dog against the Atlanta Braves. The 14-year veteran allowed two runs over 7 2/3 innings, holding Atlanta to five hits.
San Diego’s Will Venable cracked his eight homer of the year, driving in three runs to give his squad an early 5-0 lead. Padres reliever Dale Thayer earned a save, bailing out mate Tim Stauffer after a late surge from the Braves’ bats.
Miley goes six in Los Angeles
Miley logged a no-decision on the same night’s card, with Arizona rallying for a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 26-year-old gave up three runs over six frames, allowing one homer as part of nine hits.
Arizona’s Willie Bloomquist drove home a pair of runs in the ninth inning, giving his club a late 4-3 lead. Diamondbacks closer Heath Bell logged his 12th save, notching a cashed ticket for my followers at plus 165 MLB odds.
Back Arizona as a road dog
Marquis moved to a price of minus 110 home ‘chalk’ at TheGreek.com, following early wagers on both clubs. The ‘total’ opened at seven, with the OVER listed at a minus 130 premium.
I am backing Miley and Arizona for my free pick here, staying on the lefty’s train in this spot at another solid price.
Miley has settled down in his last two road spots, giving up one homer over the span’s 12 2/3 IP. The 2012 All-Star faces a Padres lineup hitting just .219 against left-handed pitching at home, while Arizona has cashed at 5-1 in its last six spots that have followed a defeat.
Marquis has had solid numbers recently, but has struggled against some of the Diamondbacks’ bats. Arizona’s Gerardo Parra and Jason Kubel have drilled one homer each in a combined 15 plate trips against the righty, while Willie Bloomquist has hit 4-for-9. Parra has also had a hot start to his road trip, with three doubles in a 7-for-16 stretch.
Arizona is 5-0 in its last five contests that came after being held to two runs or less in its previous game. Look for the Diamondbacks’ octane to rise just enough here for your MLB picks, evening the series up in another close contest.
