Neither of these teams has been doing much right as of late; can we get on the right side of this series with some of our free MLB picks?
Wednesday's Game 3
By: Ron Patrick
Arizona has taken the first two games of this series, after its 5-3 victory Tuesday night, stretching LA's losing streak to six games. The Diamondbacks allowed the Dodgers to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh Tuesday night, then got a game-winning two-run homer from Paul Goldschmidt in the top of the ninth for the victory.
Arizona won as a +110 underdog on the MLB betting line Tuesday, and the game sneaked OVER its total of 7.5 runs thanks to Goldschmidt's bomb.
So the Snakes will go for the series sweep when the teams meet Wednesday night (10:10 pm ET).
Wednesday's D'Backs-Dodgers Betting Odds
As of Wednesday AM the best line we could find on Los Angeles with Clay Kershaw was the -170 offered at Pinbet, while Arizona with Wade Miley could be played at +162 on the MLB odds boards at Bet365.
Wednesday's Pitching Match-Up
Kershaw (3-2, 1.66) is five-for-seven on quality starts this season, and the Dodgers are 4-3 in Kershaw outings. They'd be a little better than that for Clay-K, but run support has been lacking.
Last time out Kershaw held the Giants to one run through seven innings, but LA lost 2-1. Just before that he put on one of his patented lights-out performances, holding the Brewers scoreless on four hits through eight innings, walking none while striking out 12 in a 2-0 Dodgers victory.
For the season Kershaw has allowed just nine ER, 29 hits and 15 bases on balls through 48 2/3 innings, with 52 Ks.
One month ago Kershaw took a tough loss vs. these D'Backs, allowing three runs in seven-plus innings of a 3-0 LA defeat. Last year Kershaw started four times against Arizona, and while he only gave up eight ER through 25 1/3 innings, LA lost three of those four games.
Miley (2-1, 3.06) is three-for-six on quality starts this season, and the Diamondbacks are 3-3 in Miley starts. Last time out he gave up four runs and nine hits in five innings vs. the Padres, while just before that he managed to only go 4 1/3 innings vs. the Rockies, allowing zero runs but walking seven batters.
On the season Miley has allowed 12 ER and 34 hits through 35 1/3 innings, but his 17 walks have been a bit of a problem.
Last year Miley started four times against the Dodgers and held them to nine ER through 28 innings. Arizona split those four games.
Our Take on Wednesday's Game
It's not easy to go against Kershaw, but Arizona just seems, at the moment, to have LA's number. So we'll add the Diamondbacks, at the underdog price, to our list of free MLB picks for Wednesday.
Tuesday's Game Two
By: Ron Patrick
Arizona took the opener of this series Monday night 9-2, banging out 15 hits while getting a quality start from Trevor Cahill. The Diamondbacks won as +100 dogs on the MLB betting line, and the game played OVER its total of seven.
LA is streaking, but in the wrong direction, having lost five games in a row.
So Arizona is two games above .500 and two games out of first place in the NL West, while LA is five games under .500 and 5.5 games out of first, heading into Tuesday night's game (10:10 pm ET).
Tuesday's MLB Betting Odds
In perusing baseball betting shops Tuesday morning the best price we saw on Los Angeles with Josh Beckett was the -116 offered at Pinbet, while Arizona with Brandon McCarthy could be gotten at +110 at several shops, including GoBov.lv.
Tuesday's Pitching Match-Up
McCarthy (0-3, 7.22) is a perfectly lousy 0-for-six this season in quality starts, and Arizona is 2-4 in games he's started. Last time out, last Wednesday vs. the Giants, McCarthy gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings, and just before that gave up six runs in six innings vs. the Rockies.
On the season McCarthy has been tagged for 27 ER and 53 hits in 33 2/3 innings. The OVER/UNDERS have gone 3-2-1 in McCarthy's starts.
Last year, pitching for Oakland, McCarthy started once against the Dodgers and picked up a victory, throwing seven innings of two-hit shutout ball.
Beckett (0-4, 5.24), by our tough standards, is just one-for-six on quality starts, allowing 20 ER and 38 hits through 34 innings. LA is just 1-5 in games Beckett has started this year.
Last time out Beckett gave up four runs in four innings vs. Colorado, and just before that he allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings vs. the Brewers. Through his first three starts Beckett had given up seven runs through 18 innings; but over his last three starts he's allowed 13 ER in 16 innings.
Three weeks ago Beckett faced Arizona and fashioned his best outing of the season, giving up just one run and six hits through 8 1/3 innings, walking one and striking out nine. But that one run, plated in the bottom of the ninth, cost LA the game in a 1-0 defeat.
Last year Beckett started once against the Diamondbacks and picked up a win, allowing one run through 6 1/3 innings.
Our Take on Tuesday's Game
Neither of today's starting pitchers inspires much confidence, but if we had to give an edge it would go to Beckett. But the Dodgers are still banged up, and we don't like giving the price on the favorite. So despite our qualms about McCarthy we'll add Arizona to our list of free MLB picks for Tuesday.
Pick: Take the D'Backs at the +110 offered at GoBov.

Monday's Series Opener
By: Ron Patrick
Monday's D'Backs-Dodgers Betting Odds
As of Monday AM the best MLB odds we could find on Arizona with Trevor Cahill was the -106 offered at PinBet, while LA with Chris Capuano could be played at +102 at 5Dimes.
Also, a few baseball betting shops are listing the Dodgers at -170 to win this series, with the D'Backs getting +150 as road dogs.
Diamondbacks-Dodgers Series Set-Up
Arizona just dropped two of three games in San Diego over the weekend, losing Sunday's rubber match 5-1. So the Diamondbacks have lost five of their last six games.
Los Angeles, meanwhile, just got swept three games by the Giants in San Francisco over the weekend, losing Sunday night's series finale 4-3.
So Arizona, at 16-15, sits in third place in the National Leage West, three games behind the first-place Giants, while LA, at 13-17, is 5.5 games off the pace.
In the first meeting this season between these two teams the D'Backs took two of three games from LA in Phoenix three weeks ago. Two of those three games played UNDER on the totals, as the Dodgers got shut out twice.
Last year Arizona took the season series from Los Angeles 12 games to six.
Monday's Pitching Match-Up
Cahill (1-3, 2.84) is three-for-six on quality starts this season, and despite some good numbers the D'Backs have only won two of his starts. Last time out Cahill held the Giants to one run and four hits in eight innings, and just before that he limited Colorado to one run through five innings.
For the season Cahill has allowed 12 ER and 43 baserunners (hits + walks) in 38 innings of work, posting a 32/13 K/BB ratio.
Also, the OVER/UNDERS have gone a perfect 0-6 in Cahill's starts this season.
Three weeks ago Cahill threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings vs. the Dodgers, allowing six hits, walking none and striking out four.
Last year Cahill started five times against LA and was tough, giving up 10 ER and 26 hits through 31 2/3 innings; the D'Backs won four of those five games.
Capuano is coming off the DL Monday to make his second start of this season. Cappy began this season in the LA bullpen, but joined the rotation with injuries to Zack Greinke and Chad Billingsley. His first start did not go well, as he got tagged five runs in two innings vs. the Padres three weeks ago, then left with a strained calf, which landed him on the DL.
For the season Capuano has allowed five runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings, all against offensively-challenged San Diego.
Last year Capuano made four starts against Arizona, and got clipped for 14 ER and 23 hits in 22 innings; the Dodgers split those four games.
In the battle of the bullpens D'Backs relievers own a collective 3.12 ERA, which ranks 12th in the Majors, but they've also managed to blow 10 save opportunities. The LA pen, meanwhile, ranks 26th with a 4.63 ERA and is nine-for-14 on save opps.
LA “slugger” Adrian Gonzalez has not started the last four games because of a sore neck, although he did deliver a two-run single as a pinch hitter Sunday. Still, he's listed as questionable for Monday's game.
Also, Hanley Ramirez is back on the DL after pulling a hamstring last week.
Our Take on Monday's Game
We're getting the feeling simply stacking their lineup with high-priced All-Stars might not work out for the Dodgers. Where's the depth? Arizona, meanwhile, seems to have LA's number lately. So we'll add the Diamondbacks to our list of free MLB picks for Monday.
